Who We Are

SHC's mission is to engage with refugees and immigrants to build better communities. SHC envisages a world where our communities are pathways to empowerment and thriving futures. SHC was founded in 2017 as a result of volunteer outreach to refugee families living in Maryland. It strives to provide refugee and immigrant families with the building blocks they need to access educational, vocational, and family programs. Through SHC, families receive English language instruction and educational programs, learn to navigate local services, and get connected to a warm and inclusive community.

What We Do

SHC works with refugees and immigrants in Maryland and Washington D.C. SHC supports individuals and their families through a network of volunteer tutors and community groups. SHC family-friendly English Language Program eases family transition into new communities and builds confidence and independence.

SHC adult volunteers serve as English tutors or assist with our child-friendly English classes. We also have opportunities for High School students to lead story times for younger kids and support our annual school supply drive.
