We need volunteers for the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade to act as unit leaders, leading the balloons and dressing up in costume to be on the floats. Also, we need assistance with set-up and break-down. The parade takes place SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, in downtown Silver Spring. The hours are from 7:30am to 1:30pm (you need to be present the whole time) on Saturday, November 16.
Volunteering at the parade is a fun way to earn SSL hours and get into the holiday spirit. The parade begins with Thanksgiving units and ends with Hanukah and Christmas units. Volunteers wear holiday costumes and participate in the parade. We serve hot chocolate and treats, and you get to enjoy the larger than life inflatables, glittery floats, and marching band music.
Dress warmly, as you will be outside. You should try and wear red or black as your outside layer color. Once you arrive, you will be assigned a position and given directions about your volunteer job. The parade is a couple of hours long, so when you get through the parade once, you should go back to the beginning and the volunteer coordinator will put you on another float/balloon. The same is true after the parade, for clean-up/costume sorting/ float break-down. Check-in for volunteers will be at the Silver Spring Civic Building, One Veterans Place at the corner of Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street, 20910. Age 13 and above.
Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns.
