Help us plant chestnuts at the Baltimore Agricultural Center greenhouse on Saturday 4 February at 9:30. The work will involve filling many small pots with soil, fertilizer, water, and chestnuts.
The nuts were harvested last fall from trees that had been purposefully cross-pollinated to develop the most promising gene lines. Later this season, additional volunteers will test the new seedlings and plant the best prospects in orchards. Hopefully, this next generation of trees will be incrementally more resistant to chestnut blight, moving one step further in the American Chestnut Foundation's larger program to restore a native tree to our region's environment.
Volunteers will work at the greenhouse located at 1114 Shawan Rd, in Cockeysville MD from 9:30 until about 12:30. You might want to bring gardening gloves.
