Who We Are
Welcome to The Bernie House – A Place of New Beginnings
Our History
The Bernie House was founded in honor of Bernie Hughes, a man known for his deep compassion and commitment to family and community. Inspired by his legacy, The Bernie House was established as a long-term transitional home for families fleeing domestic violence. Since its founding, it has remained a symbol of hope and resilience for survivors looking to rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.
Our Mission and Goals
The Bernie House provides a safe home and supportive environment where families can heal, grow, and thrive. Our goal is not just to offer shelter—but to break the cycle of domestic violence by equipping survivors with the tools they need for long-term independence and success.
Our Programs
We offer comprehensive support that includes:
Safe Transitional Housing: A fully furnished home where families can live rent-free for up to two years.
Life Skills Training: Budgeting, cooking, parenting, job readiness, and more.
Case Management: Individualized support plans tailored to each family’s needs.
Educational Support: Assistance for both children and adults, including tutoring, school advocacy, and career development.
Community Partnerships: Access to mental health counseling, legal aid, and healthcare through trusted local partners.
Our Achievements
100% of families who complete our program transition into permanent housing.
Over 85% of parents gain employment or further their education while at The Bernie House.
We've helped dozens of families find stability, with several returning to mentor others.
Recently, two families successfully transitioned to independent living, making space for three new families to begin their journey to recovery and empowerment.
What We Do
When you volunteer with The Bernie House, you’re helping to restore dignity, rebuild lives, and empower survivors. Whether you're providing administrative support, organizing donations, tutoring children, helping with the move in/out process, assisting with property maintenance, or giving your time to our CARA Program, your time and talents make a direct and lasting impact.
