Who We Are

Our mission is to end the practice of torture wherever it occurs and support survivors as them empower themselves, their families and communities wherever they are.

Since its founding in 1998, the Torture Abolition & Survivors Support Coalition (TASSC) has helped over 7,000 survivors of torture and their families from 72 different countries access a holistic suite of social services, including legal support through the asylum process, psychological and medical care, case management, and employment assistance. Our model is designed to encourage and supplement the efforts of survivors who seek self-sufficiency and healthy futures through our culturally sensitive, trauma-informed care and community resources. TASSC serves torture survivors residing in the Washington DC metro area; we provide holistic, wraparound care to a growing population of torture survivors fleeing repression in their home countries. For many TASSC members, our organization is the first real welcome into a community that they experience since fleeing persecution in their home countries. Each day, TASSC members come to our office to receive case management services, medical treatment, legal assistance with asylum applications, counseling, massage therapy, and workforce training. We also offer weekly group classes like yoga, English as a second language and stress relief. Members also have daily access to the lounge, where they can enjoy lunch and companionship, use computers, and attend appointments with case managers.
