Who We Are
The First Aid Unit is a group of youth 14-20 years old and adults (ages 21 and up) that provides stand-by first aid coverage to community and private events. The First Aid Unit is designed to introduce young adults to the Emergency Medical Services profession. Members often go on to join fire departments or rescue squads and become emergency medical technicians or paramedics, or go on to other medical careers as physician assistants, nurses, or doctors. The unit is run by an officer's committee made up of a Chairman and Vice-Chairman (adult leaders) and youth officers. The Unit offers opportunities to learn and practice emergency medical care, coordinate coverage for large events, develop leadership skills, and provide a service to the community.
What We Do
Members are trained in Airborne and Bloodborne Pathogens, Standard First Aid and Healthcare Provider CPR. The highest level of training we provide is Emergency Medical Responder*, the level before EMT. Members are also encouraged to become certified as CPR and First Aid instructors.
We provide standby first aid services at local and DC Metro area community and private events; like company picnics, parades, 5K runs and camporees, and several large events on the National Mall including the 4th of July on the National Mall, the National Christmas Tree Lighting, the Cherry Blossom Festival, the White House Easter Egg Roll and the Presidential Inaugurations.
