MCAEL (Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy)

Who We Are

We support and connect adult English language learners, instructors, and programs to advance individual and community success. Our vision is a Montgomery County where English is not a barrier.

MCAEL is the coordinating entity for adult English language learning in Montgomery County. We maintain and grow a complex system of approximately 60 ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) programs, providing grant funding, professional development, and system-wide advocacy to make English classes accessible and affordable for learners throughout the community.

English language learning opportunities are essential for individuals, families, and our community overall. For the estimated 143,000 adults in Montgomery County who self-identify as being able to speak English less than “very well,” learning English can open doors to education, medical care, crucial resources, and jobs – bolstering the strength of our region.

What We Do

MCAEL has a variety of volunteer needs depending on the time of year and events we have planned:

-Event volunteers - Help with our annual fundraiser (Grown Up Spelling Bee for Adult English Programming); help with tabling events.

-Help with events to distribute laptops to English language learners - helpful to be multi-lingual and/or able to provide basic technical assistance

-Multi-lingual translators are always needed for events, meetings, etc.

-Student Volunteers (we offer SSL hours) can help with translation, office administration, technical computer assistance, and event support

- MCAEL Board, Committees, and Community Grant Panel (see www.mcael.org for details)
