The mission of Arts for the Aging is to engage older adults and caregivers with diverse abilities and backgrounds in health improvement and life enhancement through regular participation in the multidisciplinary arts. Our vision in Greater Washington D.C. and beyond is to demonstrate excellence in multidisciplinary, participatory, and inclusive arts programming. We promote dignity and compassion in the care of older adults, and demonstrate that arts intervention strategies offer accessible and uplifting ways to cope with changing abilities as we age.
Our paid, professional teaching artists are highly trained and experienced. Artistic faculty design and lead workshops in visual, musical, performing, literary, interdisciplinary, and intergenerational arts experiences. Our programs take place with community and residential care settings such as adult day centers, community centers, senior centers, nursing homes, continuing care retirement communities, senior 'Villages,' memory cafes, and group homes, primarily in Greater Washington DC.
What We Do
Pre-recorded programs: Our renowned Teaching Artists have developed short 3-15 minute interactive programs. These are available in a variety of disciplines and can easily be included in you-tube shows, displayed on closed-circuit TV systems, or emailed directly to participants.
Students earning SSL hours can help support our per-recorded programming by supporting the teaching artists with technological support during filming (behind the scenes remotely), video editing, and documenting the programs for use on social media and the Arts for the Aging website.
Students may earn SSL hours for helping with this technical work in editing film and posting them on our organization’s social media or website. Students may not themselves appear in these videos, unless you have parent authorization/permission through an official waiver or release. Students may not earn SSL hours for posting these videos on their own social media.
