Clarksburg Neighborhood Walk & Roll: Seeing Our Neighborhood, Shaping Our Future

Location: Starting and ending at The Yard

Join us for a community Walk & Roll around Clarksburg to see our neighborhood with fresh eyes and consider how we can shape its future together. Inspired by Strong Towns and Jane’s Walk principles, this 2.5-mile route will highlight key local spaces—our schools, future development sites, public corridors, small businesses, and historic landmarks.

Along the way, we’ll explore:

The need for safe, well-lit paths for students and walkers

The future of the Comsat property and the Gateway Sector Plan

Public space challenges, like illegal truck parking

The impact of supporting local businesses and jobs

Clarksburg’s history of diversity, equity, and education

The role of The Yard as a hub for neighborliness

The walk will conclude with a 30-minute debrief session at The Yard, where participants can reflect, respond, and commit to an action or advocacy step.

Who can join? Everyone is welcome—neighbors of all ages. If you prefer to bike or roll instead of walk, bring your wheels! Students may earn 2 SSL hours for participating; forms will be available at the event.

Why now? This is a particularly important moment for Clarksburg. The Montgomery County Planning Board will hold a listening session on September 25, 2025 about the Gateway Sector Master Plan. Much of what we’ll experience on this walk connects directly to that discussion.

keep the area clean. For two hours participants
can pick up trash and recyclables found along Wightman Road, between
Brink Road and Aspenwood Road.

Grab a friend or 2, put a group together and join us. Make it fun day, enjoy
the fresh air and earn SSL hours by cleaning up! We meet at the corner
of Prathertown and Wightman Road. If you can, bring a non-perishable food item to donate to our food drive.

Come spend the afternoon with a Lucky Dog! We need dog handlers to hold a dog's leash during our adoption event and talk up the dog to potential adopters during the event. We also need drivers to drive Lucky Dogs to and from our adoption event. Handler check-in is at 11:15 am (dog check-in starts at 11:45 am). You should plan to stay until 3:30 pm.

Every year, LFWA joins forces with the Alice Ferguson Foundation to help clean the entire Potomac River watershed. Hundreds and hundreds of pounds of trash will be pulled out of the River and its tributaries and feeder creeks. Come for an hour or two, come on time, come late, leave early or stay the entire time - whatever suits your schedule is perfect for us. We have bags and gloves to share. Come prepared to get muddy! Bring grabbers if you have some to reach trash in trees and other hard to get spots.

September is National Preparedness Month (NPM)! The Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (OEMHS) and our partnering stakeholders are seeking volunteers to assist and engage with community members during the 2025 Ready Montgomery: Emergency Preparedness & Public Safety Fair at the Wheaton Recreation Center (outside).

Volunteer roles and responsibilities will include, assisting with the setup of canopies, tables, and chairs for vendors/exhibitors the morning of the event, assisting vendors with unloading their vehicles and transporting (walking) equipment to their booth, welcoming attendees throughout the event, participating in activities (yard games, etc.) taking place during the event, directing attendees to the appropriate event points of contact if there are questions or concerns, and assist with the event breakdown and general cleanup (canopies, tables, chairs, trash pick-up, etc.) at the conclusion of the event.

Multi-lingual individuals and students seeking SSL hours are encouraged to apply. The Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (OEMHS) and our partnering stakeholders are seeking volunteers to assist and engage with community members during the 2025 Ready Montgomery: Emergency Preparedness & Public Safety Fair at the Wheaton Recreation Center (outside).

Volunteer roles and responsibilities will include, assisting with the setup of canopies, tables, and chairs for vendors/exhibitors the morning of the event, assisting vendors with unloading their vehicles and transporting (walking) equipment to their booth, welcoming attendees throughout the event, participating in activities (yard games, etc.) taking place during the event, directing attendees to the appropriate event points of contact if there are questions or concerns, and assist with the event breakdown and general cleanup (canopies, tables, chairs, trash pick-up, etc.) at the conclusion of the event.

Multi-lingual individuals and students seeking SSL hours are encouraged to apply. There are many opportunities based on your skills and desires from: lifting, setting up, and assembling; to guiding and directing families to different information booths; facepainting; and assisting booth staff with their operations. Regardless of your age or reason for volunteering, we have need of your help!

We meet at the Starbucks in the Sangamore Center and then walk over to Sangamore Park together with a landscaping expert who guides us in understanding what is indigenous and should be saved and freed, and what is invasive and how to clear it away. Wheaton is walking to celebrate art and its diverse cultures. On September 28, the parade and festival will feature floats, music, dance, and more than 50 booths of artists selling their original art. Wheaton Arts Parade (WAP) needs volunteers to help pull floats and manage the parade assembly area, to hang signs from vendors' booths, to help artists set up their festival exhibits, to assist stage managers, to help lead art making activities, to distribute programs, staff the information booth and to help with packing up and returning floats to storage. Volunteers will receive a T-shirt and voucher toward the purchase of food or beverage. Students 13 years and older are able to volunteer and earn SSL hours. ADULTS ARE NEEDED TOO!!

We would be happy to have you volunteer at the Interfaith Works Clothing Center and Food Pantry.  The Interfaith Works (IW) Clothing Center and Food Pantry distributes clothing, household goods, and food free of charge to clients so they can pay for rent, bills, and other expenses.  Thousands of individuals, businesses, schools, camps, service organizations, and congregations donate time and goods, which make our program possible.  We are proud to provide the link between people in our community who have things they no longer need or want with the people in the community who are in need of the same items.

Volunteer tasks in the Clothing Center include receiving donations as people drop them off, sorting them by type of donation, hanging clothes and restocking sections in the center, and helping to keep the center clean and tidy.  Volunteer tasks in the Food Pantry include restocking the store, helping answer questions that our families have, checking expiration dates on items, and helping keep track of inventory. 

All new volunteers are required to attend a brief orientation session.  Orientation is offered Wednesdays 2:30pm - 4:30PM and Saturdays 8:30 am - 10:30am. You can sign up for orientation here.

Volunteer shifts are available at the Clothing Center and Food Hub Tuesdays-Fridays 8:00am-4:00pm, and Saturdays 8:00am-2:00pm.  When you arrive to volunteer you will be assigned to the Clothing Center or Food Hub as needed.  You can sign up for volunteer shifts here.

These services connect clients to other community resources, such as primary medical care, legal services, psychiatric services, permanent housing services, and vocational services.

We are looking for volunteers to prepare meals for the 30 clients at the IW New Leaf Shelter, located at 5320 Marinelli Rd, Rockville MD, 20852. Meals need to be dropped off at the following times (please note you can drop off meals earlier):

· Breakfast: drop off by 6:00 am or the day before

· Lunch: drop off by 11:30 am

· Dinner: drop off by 6:00 pm

Interfaith Works Lon's House is a home that provide permanent housing, 24-hour oversight, and intensive case management services to 8 men with behavioral health diagnoses.

We are looking for volunteers to prepare meals for the 8 clients at the IW Lon's House, located at 109 Fleet St, Rockville, MD 20850 Meals need to be dropped off at the following times (please note you can drop off meals earlier):

· Breakfast: 9:00-10:00 am

· Lunch: 1:00-2:00 pm

· Dinner: 5:00-6:00 pm

You can sign up for dates to provide meals here.

Students can earn 2 SSL hours for making homemade meals (not for store-bought or purchased items).  

If you are interested in providing a meal to our clients and would like to serve we can have up to 5 volunteers. Masks are required for all volunteers along with a temperature and symptom upon arrival. Breakfast is drop off only. Students can also earn SSL hours for the time spent serving meals outside of school hours. Please let us know at least one week in advance if you'd like to serve the meal.

If you're dropping off meals, please label the containers with the ingredients so our clients with dietary restrictions can be aware. When you arrive, you can either call our front staff at (240) 328 - 6017 or come to the front door with your food.

In addition to temporary shelter, the IW Women's Center also provides case management services to each client. These services connect clients to other community resources, such as primary medical care, legal services, psychiatric services, permanent housing services, and vocational services.

We are looking for volunteers to prepare meals for the 37 clients at the IW Women's Center, located at 2 Taft Ct, Suite 100, Rockville MD, 20850. Meals need to be dropped off at the following times (please note you can drop off meals earlier):

· Breakfast: drop off by 6:00 am or the day before

· Lunch: drop off by 11:30 am

· Dinner: drop off by 6:00 pm

At that point we will work with the target community of individuals who are intended to benefit from the project to further refine and test the solution.

Looking for an intelligent and talented team of high school or very talented middle school students who want to be part of making solutions for those in need.

Volunteer: ELECTION WORKERS NEEDED FOR 2026 GUBERNATORIAL ELECTIONS!

Election Workers and Election Judges are registered Maryland voters who volunteer to assist voters during the election process. Election Workers and Election Judges are instrumental in ensuring fair and accessible elections for all voters and protecting the integrity of the election process. In accordance with Federal and State law, they must perform duties assigned by the local Board of Elections faithfully, diligently, and without partiality or prejudice.

Every election approximately 4,111 Election Judges and Election Workers are needed to fill a variety of roles to ensure the election is carried out honestly and accurately.

Volunteers may serve as:

Election Judges - facilitating the election in a polling place during Early Voting or on Election DayDrop Box Attendants – retrieving ballots from designated drop boxesCanvassers – assisting in counting voted ballotsNursing Home Program – assisting voters in designated nursing homes

We offer a variety of positions with full-day and part-day hours of service. Some positions require prior experience and/or use of an automobile. Election Judges who are bilingual in Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and French are needed to help voters requesting language assistance.

Election Judges and Election Workers receive a set stipend (payment), based on their assigned position. To receive the service stipend, you must successfully complete all required training and fulfill all election duties to which you are assigned.

* Election Workers who previously served as an election judge in 2022 election cycle or earlier will receive a $100.00 bonus for each full Election Day and/or each Early Voting Day or $50.00 for each part-day served during the 2024 elections.

Stipend Vs. Student Service Learning (SSL) Hours

For your service, you may either earn a stipend (payment) or Student Service-Learning (SSL) Hours. Your social security number must be submitted to receive stipend (payment). This can be provided once application has been processed and submitted in EJ Connection.  If you wish to receive SSL hours for your service, you do not need to provide your Social Security Number. SSL hours and applicable form will be emailed within six weeks after the election. The SSL form must be submitted to the corresponding MCPS SSL Coordinator (MCPS listor staff.

Election Workers and Election Judges are registered Maryland voters who volunteer to assist voters during the election process. Election Workers and Election Judges are instrumental in ensuring fair and accessible elections for all voters and protecting the integrity of the election process. In accordance with Federal and State law, they must perform duties assigned by the local Board of Elections faithfully, diligently, and without partiality or prejudice.

Every election approximately 4,111 Election Judges and Election Workers are needed to fill a variety of roles to ensure the election is carried out honestly and accurately.

Volunteers may serve as:

Election Judges - facilitating the election in a polling place during Early Voting or on Election DayDrop Box Attendants – retrieving ballots from designated drop boxesCanvassers – assisting in counting voted ballotsNursing Home Program – assisting voters in designated nursing homes

We offer a variety of positions with full-day and part-day hours of service. Some positions require prior experience and/or use of an automobile. Election Judges who are bilingual in Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and French are needed to help voters requesting language assistance.

Election Judges and Election Workers receive a set stipend (payment), based on their assigned position. To receive the service stipend, you must successfully complete all required training and fulfill all election duties to which you are assigned.

* Election Workers who previously served as an election judge in 2022 election cycle or earlier will receive a $100.00 bonus for each full Election Day and/or each Early Voting Day or $50.00 for each part-day served during the 2024 elections.

Stipend Vs. Student Service Learning (SSL) Hours

For your service, you may either earn a stipend (payment) or Student Service-Learning (SSL) Hours. Your social security number must be submitted to receive stipend (payment). This can be provided once application has been processed and submitted in EJ Connection.  If you wish to receive SSL hours for your service, you do not need to provide your Social Security Number. SSL hours and applicable form will be emailed within six weeks after the election. The SSL form must be submitted to the corresponding MCPS SSL Coordinator (MCPS listor staff.

Little Bennett Campground is hosting a spooky Haunted Trail and Magic Pumpkin Patch this Fall, and needs volunteers to help it be the spookiest place in the woods!

The Community Garden at HCH is a 400 sq ft space with 24 garden beds and a greenhouse, used by community members to grow their own food and by HCH to grow seedlings and produce for donation—helping provide fresh, nutritious foods to those facing food insecurity.

We’re looking for volunteers to support garden maintenance during scheduled shifts. This is a great chance to learn about gardening, connect with the local community, and support our mission.

Volunteer tasks may include:

· Weeding, planting, watering, harvesting, pest management, other garden tasks

· Applying bulk soil amendments, dumping and spreading wood chips

· Compost maintenance

· Greenhouse and tool shed organization and cleaning

Tasks vary with the season, with the most help needed in spring and summer. HCH provides tools, gloves, and guidance. At least one staff member will be on-site during shifts.

What to bring/wear:

· Water bottle, and snacks if desired

· Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

· Closed-toe shoes

Volunteers must be 18+ or accompanied by a guardian, unless arranged otherwise. All activities are optional—please take breaks as needed—but note that many tasks involve physical labor such as lifting, squatting, standing for long periods, and working in hot weather.

Each year we grow about 2 tons of organic food, which is distributed to people in need, in collaboration with Manna Food Center. Although Maryland is the wealthiest state in the US as measured by median household income (and Montgomery County is the second wealthiest county in Maryland), poverty and hunger are widespread and growing problems.

Description: We’re seeking compassionate volunteers to support families in need through our Montgomery County distribution center, which receives thousands of pounds of donated food, clothing, diapers, toys, and essential household items daily. Volunteers play a vital role in ensuring these items reach the people who need them most.

Tasks may include distributing food to families, preparing grocery bags for home deliveries, organizing donated goods, assisting with inventory, loading and unloading delivery vehicles, and maintaining a clean and welcoming space for all.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful difference, earn SSL hours, and engage the whole family—children over 10 are welcome to participate with a parent or guardian (required for anyone under 16).

Please make sure to wear close-toed shoes when volunteering!


NEW: Traffic Volunteer (Monday–Friday, 8 AM–4 PM) – We need 1 volunteer daily participating in the Maryland Community Service Program to assist with managing traffic outside. This role is outdoors, so please dress accordingly( 18+ only)

Physical ability: While some of these tasks are physically strenuous, we have plenty of opportunities for folks who have physical limitations or other restrictions, and our warehouse is wheelchair accessible.

Description: While we no longer operate a pantry at Lakeforest Mall, we're still just as committed to serving the Gaithersburg community. Our food distribution operations have moved to South Lake Elementary School. Every Tuesday, So What Else, with the help of our incredible team, provides free food to over 500 people. Volunteers can park in the parking lot that is to the right down the hill close to the playground at the school.


Volunteers will help with the following tasks: setting up tables, setting up tents, preparing produce, sorting produce, helping with line control, breaking down boxes, cleaning up, and more. Volunteers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods, lift large boxes, and do a considerable amount of movement. This shift involves interacting with clients, other volunteers, and So What Else team members. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing they can both move around in and get dirty( NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift. This is a great opportunity for SSL hours, and children above 10 can participate as long as their parent/guardian accompanies anyone under 16.

7:00 am to 11:00 am: Volunteers will help load food boxes into cars, assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

12:00 pm to 3 PM: Volunteers will help load cars with food boxes and assist with clean-up after the distribution has ended.

Volunteers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods, lift large boxes, and do a considerable amount of movement. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing they can both move around in and get dirty (NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift. This is a great opportunity for SSL hours, and children above 10 can participate as long as their parent/guardian accompanies anyone under 16.

AGE RESTRICTION: This is a great opportunity for children aged 10 and above to participate. A parent or guardian must accompany children aged 10-15, and if they arrive without one, their parent or guardian will be contacted. Volunteers aged 16 and above can participate independently without the presence of a parent or guardian.


5:30 am to 8:00 am: Volunteers will help prepare food boxes to load into cars for our drive-thru distribution and assist with traffic control. (Double Hours are available for individuals participating in the Maryland Community Service Program when volunteering for the Traffic Volunteer position.) (THE DOUBLE IS NOT FOR SSL )

7:00 am to 11:00 am: Volunteers will help load food boxes into cars, assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

10:00 am to 1:00 pm: Volunteers will help load cars with food boxes,  assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

12:00 pm to 3 PM: Volunteers will help load cars with food boxes and assist with clean-up after the distribution has ended.

We encourage you to sign up for any shift, even if you can't stay for the entire time. Simply inform the site lead upon arrival so our team can accommodate your schedule.

*To reach our warehouse, type "4924 Wyaconda Rd, North Bethesda, MD" into your GPS. This will take you directly to the entrance of the parking lot. After you pull into the lot, please look for the yellow parking spots immediately to your right. You can park in any of the yellow parking spots in the lot. Parking is not permitted in front of Dogtopia and against the fence. To find our warehouse entrance, look for signs for "Dogtopia" and then keep walking; our warehouse is to the left of Dogtopia, directly around the corner. When you arrive please walk to the outdoor tables and ask for a staff person, then let them know you're there to volunteer.

Student Service Learning

Students can earn 1 Student Service Learning Hour for every 2 quarts of frozen soup delivered to others. There is a maximum of 10 quarts that can qualify for any given day (5 SSL hours). Most recipes render 6 quarts of soup, 3 SSL hours. 

Please note the following guidelines for student service through live virtual platforms:

A student’s parent/guardian must provide the nonprofit with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering. Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform. Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times. The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur. Virtual sessions will not be recorded. Students should not share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves, unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release. Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not shared. Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy at any time the student is interacting with the nonprofit and its clients. The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home.

Student Service Learning

Students can earn 1 Student Service Learning Hour for every 2 quarts of frozen soup delivered to others. There is a maximum of 10 quarts that can qualify for any given day (5 SSL hours). Most recipes render 6 quarts of soup, 3 SSL hours. 

Please note the following guidelines for student service through live virtual platforms:

A student’s parent/guardian must provide the nonprofit with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering. Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform. Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times. The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur. Virtual sessions will not be recorded. Students should not share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves, unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release. Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not shared. Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy at any time the student is interacting with the nonprofit and its clients. The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home.

Elevate the Future is a U.S.-based student-led 501(c)(3) organization committed to increasing access to business and computer science education around the world. Elevate the Future's Maryland Chapter seeks remote student volunteers for its Natural Sciences Education Department, even subjects that are not extensively covered in MCPS curricula. Initial appointment rank upon selection is commensurate with knowledge and experience. Volunteers with one year of active, high-quality service to Elevate the Future Maryland will automatically be promoted to Level 2 (senior) rank.

Our Virtual Service Policy

Developers will create educational materials for natural sciences curricula. This includes slide presentations, example activities, and extension activities. The Natural Sciences Education Department may also host educational events and competitions, including but not limited to guest speaker seminars, pitch contests, and remote lab activities, for which developers are permitted to instruct.

 

Quality work must be submitted before the deadline and done in a professional manner. Students will earn hour-for-hour the amount of time serving when they are directly supervised, as well as limited additional hours per week for asynchronous tasks they are assigned to.

Service hours are defined as the time volunteers spend completing tasks assigned by their director in furthering the mission of Elevate the Future Maryland—working to achieve business and STEM literacy for all. Service hours are tracked by our directors, who review the submitted evidence, maintain a log, verify student service on MCPS Form 560-51 (Student Service Learning Activity Verification)

Volunteer: Pillowcases for Cancer Patients

Kits to Heart is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that gives curated cancer care kits to patients and their loved ones. Our mission is to bring smiles and solidarity to those affected by cancer, one kit at a time.

These should be two-dimensional and can be granny squares, flowers,  real or imaginary creatures, or other crochet or knit creations in acrylic yarn - of any size or shape in order to fill up 20"x60" or 54"x45" sized panels.
