Volunteer: Clean Up Trash and Recycling in the Glenmont Forest Neighborhood-Recurring Shifts

Clean up trash with the with Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association (GFNCA)

Join the Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association on the second Sunday of each month from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM to help clean up trash and recycling in the Glenmont Forest neighborhood and surrounding areas.

You are welcome to participate as often as you’d like — monthly attendance is encouraged but not required.

Why It Matters

During rainstorms, discarded trash and recycling wash into storm drains and flow into rivers, lakes, and oceans. By removing litter from our neighborhood, we help prevent pollution and protect our waterways — even our drinking water. Together, we can make a visible difference in our community and environment.

Meeting Location: Little Library at Lindell St. & Judson Rd. Silver Spring, MD

Student Service Learning (SSL) SSL hours are available for students.

Students under 14 must attend with a parent or guardian.Students ages 14–17 attending without a parent must bring a signed minor release form.Participation is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian.Service activities will be directly supervised by adult representatives of GFNCA in a public space

Come help keep our neighborhood clean and protect our shared environment.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours in a public space under direct supervision of the nonprofit organization. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns.

The Serenity Community Gardens and Urban Farm is seeking volunteers who would like to steward a garden plot(s) to help feed themselves, their family, and our community.
This is a hands-on opportunity to grow food, build relationships with neighbors, and care for our shared environment. Garden Stewards help cultivate a thriving, welcoming space where food and knowledge are shared.


About the Garden Steward Role
Garden Stewards play an active part in growing and maintaining the garden.


This role involves:

Planting vegetables, herbs, perennials, and native plantsWatering, pruning, cultivating, and harvesting cropsRemoving invasive plantsWeeding and maintaining healthy garden bedsBending, standing, lifting, and working outdoors
Keeping shared spaces clean and organizedUsing garden tools responsibly and returning them after usePicking up after yourself and caring for common areasCollaborating and working respectfully with other volunteersSharing harvested food with family, neighbors, or the communityWeighing and recording harvested produce to support future grant fundingInforming others if issues arise that need attentionParticipating in learning, teaching, and environmental stewardship

This is a shared community space rooted in cooperation, care, and mutual support.


Ideal volunteers:

Are excited to grow food and learn alongside othersAre comfortable with outdoor physical activityValue collaboration and community connectionAre willing to help maintain a clean and respectful shared spaceUnderstand the importance of tracking harvest totals for reporting purposesThis role is not for SSL hours, unless for a specific eventIn the case that it is for a specific event and students are able to earn SSL hours they will be directly supervised by adult representatives of GFNCA in a public space
