Help Kids Sleep Better – Volunteer to Deliver Beds with Sleep in Heavenly Peace!

Imagine a child sleeping on the floor — now imagine being the reason that child gets their very own bed. At Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), we believe no child should go without a bed, yet far too many are.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: get kids off the floor and into beds of their own. We build and deliver complete twin-size bed sets — including a frame, mattress, sheets, pillow, and blanket — to children in need.

Event Description
Join us for an morning of purpose, teamwork, and joy! Together, we’ll deliver pre-built bed parts and assemble them right in the homes of families in need. Once assembled, we’ll make each bed sleep-ready — fully dressed with all the bedding a child needs for a warm, restful night.

No experience necessary — just bring your heart and helping hands. We’ll guide you every step of the way.

Volunteer Role

Help transport and carry bed materials into homes Assemble beds (minimal assembly required; instructions provided) Make beds cozy with mattresses, sheets, pillows, and blankets A vehicle is required to participate. We will be traveling to multiple homes. Volunteers with trucks or vans are especially needed and appreciated, but not required. Bilingual a Plus

Why it Matters

Vines and bushes are killing our native trees and plants. Volunteers will use clippers, saws and other hand tools to remove the invasive plants and free the trees. Participants have told us that they can hear the trees thanking them. It's an opportunity to be outside and make a difference for the environment. The activity is open to everyone. Training is on site.  We have tools and gloves to lend.

Meet at the Willard Avenue Park entrance at 5310 Willard Avenue.  We will be working on removing ivy from the trees there.  There is free parking along Willard Avenue on the North side of the street.  DO NOT PARK on the south side; that is residential permit parking only.

Visit LFWA.org/events for registration and complete details.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns.

Volunteer: Sandy Spring Museum Transcribe-a-Thon

Explore the history of Sandy Spring through transcription! At Transcribe-A-Thons, help us transcribe original archival documents to help make these fascinating and important artifacts searchable and accessible to all.
All 2025 transcribe-a-thons* will focus on documents which contain information about the Black community in Sandy Spring, a community which has previously been under-documented in the Museum’s archives. By transcribing these 19th century documents, you make the entire content searchable allowing all instances of a person’s name to be found across our archives rather than simply by the details of their documents’ white authors.
There will be two sessions over zoom from 1:00pm-3:00pm and 3:30pm-5:30pm. SSM staff will be on the call to help answer questions. Volunteers can sign up for one or both sessions. This opportunity is appropriate for ages 13 and up.  Many documents require the ability to read cursive to transcribe. SSL hours are available. Please register at this link: https://ci.ovationtix.com/36765/production/1238324.
For accommodation requests, please email bmiller@sandyspringmuseum.org or call 301-774-0022.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.

Virtual sessions will not be recorded.

Volunteer: 1/16 Material & Lumber Load pre-event

Are you looking for a hands-on way to give back but with limited availability? Join us as we Load Material into the Transport vehicle and help move essential materials for an upcoming bed build event.

To Participate: Click Here to Register on our Website

About Us: Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP):

Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a volunteer-led nonprofit organization committed to building and delivering beds to children in need — because every child deserves a safe, comfortable place to sleep. Our local Montgomery chapter works year-round with volunteers and community partners to bring comfort and dignity to children across our area. We help children who have been sleeping on the floor, on couches, or sharing overcrowded sleeping spaces.

The Opportunity – Material Loading Volunteer:

We’re gearing up for a remote Sleep in Heavenly Peace bed build, and we need a few strong, reliable volunteers to help us load the SHP truck with equipment and supplies.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Lifting and loading supply bins, tools, and equipment

Helping move materials from storage to the SHP truck

Working as a small team to prepare for our off-site build event

Who We’re Looking For:

Volunteers comfortable with lifting/moving items

Physically active individuals

Dependable, team-oriented helpers

If you enjoy hands-on work and want to help us get ready to serve more kids in need of beds, we’d love to have you join us!

Why It Matters:

Every load of lumber you transport becomes the frame of a bunk bed… Every bunk bed becomes a safe, warm place for a child to rest… And every child deserves that kind of peace. Your one afternoon of service each month makes a direct, hands-on impact — helping us turn raw materials into restored hope for families in need.

Completion of this form, including the ACTUAL required signatures, is required by all volunteers to participate in this SSL opportunity.

Please do not use your MCPS email to respond with us as we cannot not reply to you via this type of email address.

This is an amazing opportunity to gain volunteer experience helping Arise and Flourish, a non-profit organization based in Montgomery County, Maryland that speaks to students about substance use and misuse.  During the last eleven years, Arise and Flourish has paved the way through public and private schools on educating our youth of the dangers associated with addiction. Our program delivers a robust and real-life look into the cycle of addiction and provides an understanding, knowledge and insight on how to exercise prevention. Arise and Flourish’s family of dedicated volunteers have delivered our program to nearly 400 schools and have reached over 49,000 students with our impactful message of prevention and hope. In addition to our visits to schools, we are also asking for the student’s assistance to continue the education of addiction and prevention through SSL hours.

What students will do:

Student will first need to complete the volunteer form/parent/guardian permission slip and submit via to e-mail info@ariseandflourish.org. Please note that MCPS has not vetted the YouTube videos created by our organization and parents/guardians are responsible for previewing the videos and then providing parent permission for their students to view the videos.

Once approved, students will watch two video presentations provided by our organization.

One video is our speakers who are people in recovery who share their personal experience The second video is the presentation on the cycle of addiction which has information on how addiction happens.

Students can obtain SSL hours in two ways:

Write a 2-page paper based on their understanding of drug and alcohol prevention on the information received from the two videos. Papers will only be reviewed by our organization. Create an art project, including a paragraph explaining their artwork, based upon their understanding of prevention on the information they received from the videos. Art projects might be shared on our social media platforms so please review the privacy information below when submitting your project.

How to earn community service hours (SSL):

Students have the ability to earn 1 SSL hour for the quality completion of this project and can earn up to 4 SSL hours in total (cumulative - not per year) for each speaker video watched and paper written (up to 4 speaker videos along with the one video for the cycle of addiction).

When your paper or art project is complete, e-mail info@ariseandflourish.org your 2-page paper or an electronic copy of your art project and paragraph to collect your signed SSL sheet for this project. Students will need to cc their parents as well on the email submission. Please allow 3-5 business days to receive your signed SSL form.

Privacy:

Please, do not share any pictures or likeness of the students as well as personal information such as home address, email or phone number etc. in your paper or artwork. Also, please do not include any real-life pictures or images of yourself. We ask that students include their first name, grade and school only on each submission.

About Us:

The PATESI Foundation is dedicated to advancing period equity and empowering the community through education, access, and advocacy. We believe that no one should have their potential limited by a lack of menstrual resources or understanding—and we work every day to change that.

Role Overview:

The PATESI Foundation is seeking male volunteers to serve as educators and allies.  No previous experience needed. We are inviting men who believe in dignity, equity, and community support to join our Male Ally-ship Program as volunteer educators. This is an initiative designed to equip boys and men with the knowledge and confidence to support menstrual health, reduce stigma, and stand alongside peers experiencing period poverty. Menstrual health isn’t “a women’s issue”, it’s a human issue, and we need passionate male voices to help normalize the conversation, challenge stigma, and help educate the community.

Key Responsibilities:

Agency: PATESI Foundation

As a volunteer educator, you will:

Learn essential menstrual health education to help dismantle shame and misinformationHelp break harmful stereotypes and silence Facilitate safe, fun and respectful conversations with youth and adults Provide a safe space for discussionShare practical ways men can support individuals lacking access to menstrual products Model empathy, leadership, and ally-ship in your community

Volunteer: Officer of the Day (OD)

Our Officers of the Day are the first to make contact with people calling for help. They work from home, using their phones. They call our voicemail system, retrieve the messages, and call people back.  (Most of our ODs protect their privacy by using *67 for these calls.) If the person requesting food assistance is in our service area, they get the information needed and pass it on to the Food Driver on duty. Financial assistace calls are passed on to the financial assistance officer (when we have the funds).  If the person is outside of our area or is requesting something we are not able to do, they refer people to other groups that might be able to help.

ODs are scheduled for the day, but they do not have to be available the whole day - they can check messages and call people back when they have the time. Messages that an OD is unable to get to are left on the voicemail system and handled by the following day's OD. Some ODs take one day a month, while others take several, depending on their availability.

Volunteer: Food Drivers - Rockville

Our food drivers deliver food from our pantry (located in Rockville United Methodist Church, near Rockville Town Center) to needy people in Rockville. They need to have a driver's license and the use of a car, and they need to be able to carry bags of food. When they get a call from the Officer of the Day with a request, they go to the pantry, check the client's eligibility in the records, call the client to schedule a delivery, and pack and deliver the food to the client.

Drivers can sign up for one day a month, or more, if they desire, and they can do the deliveries whenever it's convenient for them and the client (you don't have to be available the whole day). Most of our drivers do the deliveries in the afternoon/early everning. Some of our drivers work with a partner - a friend or a spouse - and some work alone. There are days that no call comes in, and sometimes there are several. If (rarely) there are too many, some can be passed on to next day's driver. If interested, email rockvillemdhelp@gmail.com.

Volunteer: Perfect for Groups - Support New Neighbors with a Welcome Basket

When families move into AHC's affordable housing communities, we like to give them Welcome Bags filled with essential household supplies to say "welcome home."

Volunteers will purchase all the items to fill the bags. A large, sturdy, reusable tote bag with a square or rectangle base is ideal. For purposes of hygiene and dignity, we ask that all items are new, unopened and unused. Please make sure items fit into the bags and limit your donations to the items listed below. We do not have the space or capacity to accept other items. Most volunteers find it useful and cost-effective to purchase items in bulk, as long as each final product has all the necessary items in it. Small 8 oz containers of all liquids are best, since the bags can get quite bulky. Thank you!

A complete bag includes:

Dish soap (1)Hand soap (1)Bleach (1)All purpose cleaner (1)Sponge (1)Plunger (1)Trash bags (1 box)Gloves (1 pair)Paper towels (1 roll)Toilet paper (2-4 rolls)Hand towel (1)Plastic shower curtains and hooks (1 set)Reusable tote bag (1)Reusable laundry bag (1) Dustpan & mini broom (optional)Welcome home card (optional)

We are collecting welcome baskets for properties in Montgomery County and all across the DMV.

I want to help! What now? Please reach out to volunteer@ahcinc.org to express interest, coordinate delivery, or with any questions.
