Volunteer: Food DriveBy leading a food drive benefiting the College Park Community Food Bank, you, and each participant, will make an impact on the lives of our neighbors. This is an independent activity, not supervised by the Food Bank and not eligible for community service hours. Here is some helpful info for planning your food drive: WHAT DO WE ACCEPT?Clean, non-dented canned & boxed food items, not past their expiration date. SUGGESTED ITEMSBeans Soup Tuna Canned Fruit (in juice or light syrup) Canned Veggies (no salt added or low sodium) Peanut Butter Pasta Pasta Sauce or Canned Tomatoes Macaroni and Cheese Rice GETTING STARTEDAs a food drive organizer, here’s a few steps to follow: Practice good hygiene and social distancing in the handling of the donated food. We suggest asking for food to be bagged and then handling the bags with gloves. Advertise your collection via email, NextDoor, Facebook, your neighborhood listserv – whatever works best for you. Let people know where and when they can donate. Then place clearly labeled boxes or bins in those locations. Set a deadline for collections and remind people when it’s approaching. This will help motivate people to submit their donations. Challenges are also useful – offer a goal of a certain number of items, participants or pounds collected. Take a picture! (if you want) We love to see the faces that help make all of this possible. Drop-off your collections. Complete this Donation Form to get drop-off instructions. And thank you! Volunteer: Volunteer Needed: Green Entrepreneurship, Careers, and Tree Planting Initiative
Together, let’s grow a brighter, greener tomorrow! This opportunity is hybrid and will operate both in-person and virtually/remotely. Our nonprofit organization, Live Peace Tech Corporation, will be engaging with students through a live virtual platform (i.e. Zoom, Google Meet, Webex, etc.). We will provide direct supervision by an adult nonprofit representative (who is not the student’s parent/guardian or relative) in any virtual space (including breakout sessions) for the entire session. Please review the following information while considering this opportunity A student’s parent/guardian must provide our organization with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering. Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform. Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times. The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur. Virtual sessions will not be recorded. Students should not share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves, unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release. Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not shared. Process for tracking, logging, and verifying students’ service hours: #For any activities that are supervised live through a virtual platform or in a public space, students will earn hour-for-hour the amount of time served when they are directly supervised. #For any activity that will be performed by the students on their own at home without direct/live supervision: Criteria for Successful Completion of ProjectsFor activities that students complete independently at home without direct or live supervision, the following criteria must be met to ensure successful completion: Clear Objectives: Each activity must have a specific goal or outcome that aligns with the organization’s mission. The student should be able to articulate how their work meets these objectives. Verification: Evidence of the completed activity must be submitted, including but not limited to: Photos of the work completed Written reflection or description of the process and outcomes Presentation or report (video, PowerPoint, etc.) Quality Standards: The final product must meet the quality standards set by the organization. These standards should be clearly communicated upfront to the students and include: Relevance to the environmental, economic or social cause Accuracy, creativity, or effectiveness of the solution Ability to demonstrate a connection to the learning outcomes Time Equivalency for Awarding SSL HoursTo ensure equitable awarding of SSL (Student Service Learning) hours, students will be credited based on the successful completion of specific activities rather than a log of time spent. The following equivalency model will be used: Activity 1: Green Entrepreneurship or Green Career Program Research and present a report on a sustainable business idea. Equivalency: 2 hours for research + 1 hour for the presentation = 3 SSL hours. Activity 2: Community Engagement Campaign Design a campaign (flyers, social media) to raise awareness of sustainability issues in the community. Equivalency: 2 hours of design work = 2 SSL hours. Submission and Review ProcessStudents are required to submit their final products for review to the organization, following these steps: Submission of Materials: All completed materials (photos, reports, presentations) must be submitted via email or an online submission form provided by the organization. A deadline for submission will be clearly communicated. Review Process: A designated reviewer from the organization will assess the submissions against the set criteria for completion and quality. Feedback will be provided within one week of submission. Final Approval: Upon successful completion of the project, the student will receive confirmation of the awarded SSL hours. If revisions are needed, students will be given guidance and a deadline for resubmission. Additional NotesAll activities and SSL hours must adhere to the MCPS SSL guidelines for virtual/remote service, including documentation and approval processes. By following these steps, we ensure students receive SSL hours equitably while contributing meaningfully to the community. Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy at any time the student is interacting with the nonprofit and its clients. The nonprofit organization will determine the number of SSL hours awarded based on the evidence submitted. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns. This service activity is designed to be completed within the safety of the student’s home. Agency: Live Peace Tech Corporation

Volunteer: Help Homebound Neighbors in 20906 by Delivering Bags of Produce and Groceries. We have an urgent need for drivers in August and September! If you have 2-3 hours free on a Wednesday, in the late morning or early afternoon, you can make a big difference to our neighbors in need. Seniors, families without child care or cars, and disabled individuals, cannot take advantage of most food distribution options. Imagine trying to take a bus to pick up free food if you had toddlers, or used a wheelchair, or had an invalid spouse at home you had to care for! Oak Chapel Food Hub helps people in these situations. Each week, we fill 60 bags with produce, bread and staples, customized to the families' preferences where possible. Where we need your help is in getting this food to the people we have promised it to. Volunteers must: Have a car capable of holding 10 bags of groceries. A good driving record. Be able to carry paper grocery bags that are sometimes heavy. If you have someone you can team with, one person can drive and the other can carry the bags to the doors. What volunteering entails: 8-10 bags will be ready for you to pick up between 11 and 1 on Wednesdays. The bags will be pre-packed and a Hub volunteer will help you load the bags. The pickup location is Oak Chapel United Methodist Church, 14500 Layhill Road, near Layhill Road, Rt. 200, and Longmead Crossing Drive. You will deliver the bags to the individual addresses, ring the bell, and leave the bag at the door. Some addresses are at garden apartments up a few steps, some are inside apartment buildings with elevators and some are at private homes. All addresses are in 20906, within a few miles of Oak Chapel Hub. We do ask that bags be delivered quickly after being picked up so that food that needs to be kept cold can get back into the refrigerator. Delivery of your bags will take approximately two hours after picking up.To get started, or to ask questions, reach out to ocumhub@gmail.com with the words "Food Delivery Driver" (or "I want to earn my angel wings!") in the subject line. You can sign up for an occasional shift or, if it suits you better, you can help every week. There is a little bit of a process in getting started so please contact us soon! Puppy Parents raise our service dogs for 4 to 20 months before the dogs graduate and are placed with their forever Veteran. Each puppy goes home with his or her Puppy Parent between the ages of 8-12 weeks. To be considered for this important task, you must be willing and able to provide the following support and training for the WCC service dog in training: Provide a stable, safe, consistent and loving environment Provide the dog with access to new places, new people and new experiences Supervise the dog throughout the day Teach the dog manners and basic commands Keep the dog on a leash at all times or supervised in a securely fenced area Closely monitor the dog’s progress and submit monthly reports Attend weekly training classes, including social outings that build skills and confidence Provide the dog with age-appropriate socialization opportunities Ensure that the WCC dog is the only dog under the age of one in your home Agree to return the dog upon request Transport the dog to the veterinarian when necessary Depending on program location, you may be required to drop off/pick up the dog at the training office during the workweek.*Some locations require the puppy parent to take the service dog in training to work. Volunteer: Help Honor Military Veterans in Hospice Care!Hospice Volunteers play an important role as part of JSSA Hospice’s interdisciplinary team by supporting a patient and their family at end of life. Whether this is done remotely or in person, hospice volunteers enhance the experience of patients and families with their compassion and supportive presence. They provide in person visits from initial admission to our service, to the last days and hours of life by sitting with patients and families to ensure they are never alone. Although we are looking for every type of hospice volunteer, this opportunity is for military members who currently serve or have served for our We Honor Veterans program. The program is a collaboration between the national Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Department of Veterans Affairs. It’s purpose is to care for and honor those who have served when they reach end of life. As part of the program, we recognize Veterans with a “Pinning Ceremony” where their military service and sacrifices are publicly recognized. They receive tokens of appreciation from their Hospice team to include a U.S flag pin, certificate of thanks and a small flag inspired blanket. We are also recruiting for our Veteran to Veteran program where Active Duty members or Veterans serve as friendly visitors to our Hospice Veterans offering companionship, socialization and a supportive presence. We serve a very diverse population of patients and their families in all areas of Montgomery County and we look forward to hearing from you! Volunteer: Join our Board of Directors!Court Watch Montgomery is Recruiting Board Members! We are a small nonprofit with a big mission: to ensure safety and access to justice for survivors of intimate partner violence in Montgomery County. Through dedicated and well-trained volunteers, we monitor and collect data on protective order hearings in Montgomery County District Court, use our findings to identify and recommend needed improvements in policy and practice, and hold judges and court personnel accountable for providing a safe and respectful court environment. Since our founding in 2011, Court Watch Montgomery (CWM) has monitored more than 11,000 hearings and our resulting reports and recommendations make an impact. We found in 2022 that “staggered exits” – a recognized best practice to protect victims at the end of a protective order hearing – were being enforced only 39% of the time. We reported this finding to the public and to the court and saw an immediate increase, to 59%, in 2023. We also reported in 2023 that petitioners are far more likely to receive a final protective order when they appear in court with an advocate or attorney, highlighting a critical resource need in the county. Most recently, CWM reported on the use of gun-related best practices in protective order hearings, helping to inform the public about an issue that is the focus of a high profile Supreme Court case (Rahimi). The CWM board defines the organization’s mission and vision, develops short- and long-term plans to carry out the mission, and sets policies for effective management. Resource development and fundraising to support CWM operations are key functions of the board. We are seeking to expand our board and are committed to having a team with diverse skills, experiences, and abilities. We encourage applications from people of all backgrounds and communities, and we especially encourage those with lived experience and skills in fundraising/resource development, finance/accounting, or advocacy/policy, to apply. Interviews will be held with current CWM board members and our Executive Director.
