Every other month, we will be organizing a group of Middle and High School Students to clean up trash along the road. Our mission is to participate in a community activity by keeping county-owned roadsides litter free. This opportunity is held outdoors and near the roads. We are asking all volunteers to read and have an adult sign the consent form prior to the event. *Minors will NOT be able to participate without completed consent form.* ----- What will I be doing? Volunteer: Make Penpal Letters!Volunteers will create physical cheerful penpal letters to brighten the day of hospitalized children, seniors, and students. These letters will be distributed to hospitals, senior centers, and youth programs to help brighten someone’s day and reduce feelings of isolation. Each letter is 1 SSL hour. Please include a separate cover letter including your name, email address, school name, and number of cards submitted. Artwork Guidelines: Artwork can be created using: Colored pencils, markers, watercolor, crayons, etc. All drawings must be fully colored. Physical artworks should be created on cardstock, watercolor paper, or letter paper (cardstock or watercolor paper preferred). Fold the paper in half and only draw on one side of the paper. The other side will be used to write the letter. You can draw anything appropriate and encouraging. Please avoid violent and scary themes. Every Saturday So What Else provides free food to over 1,500 people in the parking lot in front of our warehouse with the help of our incredible volunteer team. Volunteers will help with the following tasks: setting up tables, setting up tents, preparing produce, sorting produce, helping with line control, helping to direct traffic, and more. Volunteers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods, lift large boxes, and do a considerable amount of movement. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing they can both move around in and get dirty (NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift. This is a great opportunity for SSL hours, and children above 10 can participate as long as their parent/guardian accompanies anyone under 16. AGE RESTRICTION: This is a great opportunity for children aged 10 and above to participate. A parent or guardian must accompany children aged 10-15, and if they arrive without one, their parent or guardian will be contacted. The decoration/flavor/design of your cake(s) is up to you but we would prefer if you could write “Happy Birthday!” on your cake(s). You can make a cake from a cake mix or your favorite recipe. Round, square or rectangle cakes are all okay as long as they are individually and securely boxed, with lids taped for transport. Round cakes must have multiple layers. Single layer 9" round cakes will not earn SSL hours. We also accept cupcakes. Twenty-four cupcakes are equivalent to one cake. Cake requirements are posted on our website. At Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), we believe no child should go without a bed, yet far too many are. Our mission is simple yet powerful: get kids off the floor and into beds of their own. We build and deliver complete twin-size bed sets — including a frame, mattress, sheets, pillow, and blanket — to children in need. Event Description No experience necessary — just bring your heart and helping hands. We’ll guide you every step of the way. Volunteer Role Help transport and carry bed materials into homes Assemble beds (minimal assembly required; instructions provided) Make beds cozy with mattresses, sheets, pillows, and blankets A vehicle is required to participate. Individuals assisting will need to join at the ICE office in Baltimore, Maryland for the single day appointment in mid-May. The volunteer will be responsible for picking up the designated donations from the grocery store and bringing them to the DC office where the food pantry is. They can also assist with inventory of all the products that were received and weighing each grocery bag for reporting data, although not required.
