Volunteer: Bone Builders Volunteer Leader - Kensington LibraryBone Builders is seeking caring, physically active older adults, perhaps just entering retirement, who have an interest in leading a group exercise class for seniors at Kensington Library in Kensington, MD. The exercise class specializes in osteo health and it's the perfect volunteer job for people wanting to help others (and themselves) maintain and/or increase their bone mass, increase strength and improve balance. We have volunteers with a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior experience is required. Most of our leaders are older adults who derive enormous satisfaction working with class participants to improve their health. In the free training we provide, you will learn our evidence-based exercises and also learn about teaching seniors. Our one-day training and required visits to three ongoing classes will prepare you to lead. The classes meet two days weekly, one-hour each day, and you are required to teach both days of the week. We know everyone takes vacations, etc, but there is flexibility built into the position as each class has two primary co-leaders as well as one or more secondary co-leaders who are also trained and ready to lead if one of the primary leaders is absent. If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class. Volunteer: Support Stickers for Cancer PatientsFounded by a three-time cancer survivor, Kits to Heart is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that gives curated cancer care kits to patients and their loved ones. Our mission is to bring smiles and solidarity to those affected by cancer, one kit at a time. 6 simple hand-cut stickers may receive 1 service hour Help bring cheer and motivation to cancer patients by creating custom stickers with positive messages and illustrations to be used as decorations for our cancer care kits. These stickers will serve as small but impactful tokens of encouragement, designed to uplift the spirits of those undergoing treatment. How to Get Started Brainstorm and create designs that incorporate positive messages, such as "You Are Strong," "Keep Fighting," and "Stay Positive," alongside uplifting illustrations like sunflowers, clouds, ocean themes, and smiling faces. Please NO "get well soon", "keep growing", "shine", or other messages that may unintentionally cause discomfort. As with our other service projects, you are welcome to work from the comfort of your home, with your colleagues at the office, or with your friends at school! Use digital and/or traditional art techniques to draw and create the designs. If digital, the stickers should be printed on high-quality adhesive paper or using the tutorials below. For those seeking service hours, designs may only be repeated for hand-drawn stickers, not digital designs. Simple vs. complex: We defer to YOUR judgment, as it depends on how long it takes for you to design and cut out a sticker. If it takes about 20 minutes per sticker, due to thoughtful hand-drawn designs, coloring, text, shape, etc., then we would consider it complex. If it only takes about 10 minutes per sticker, with a smiley and text, for example, then that would be considered simple. Limits: We really hope for volunteers to focus less on quantity and more on quality, so while there is no limit, we do highly encourage quality to show patients we care with thoughtful artwork and text. Using pre-cut sticker labels: Creative designs and messages on pre-cut sticker labels may be eligible for 1 service hour per 10 designs. Using wax paper: We are no longer accepting stickers made on wax/parchment paper. Please consider using inexpensive sticker paper options below, such as these sticker sheets that can be cut into any shape and peeled more easily. Once completed, follow the submission steps here. They will then be distributed to cancer patients in hospitals, treatment centers, and support groups through Kits to Heart's cancer care kits.Recommended Materials Supplies will differ depending on the method of sticker-making. Please also refer to tutorials below. Kits to Heart earns from qualifying Amazon purchases, which supports our mission at no extra cost to you. Volunteer: Deliver meals to neighbors in need in Takoma Park & Silver SpringJoin our team of dedicated volunteers who bring fresh, healthy and delicious meals from our Takoma Park kitchen to our homebound neighbors. Together, we are creating a more resilient, interconnected and compassionate community. Get started by submitting a volunteer application Each weekday, Meals on Wheels of Takoma Park and Silver Spring prepares two nourishing meals for hundreds of clients, helping them maintain their health and independence as they age, battle illness and recover from injuries. Demand for our services is rising -- tripling since 2020 -- and we're growing fast to meet the need. Delivery volunteers pick up meals around noon and hand them to clients at their homes along routes designed to take less than 90 minutes. Volunteers often work in pairs, with one driving and the other running meals from the car to the neighbor's door. Volunteers can choose recurring shifts on the same route or sign up for one-time shifts as their schedule allows. Note: Drivers use their own cars and must have a valid driver's license. Volunteer: Help those in need by making sandwiches for themSmall Things Matter's Kokua Foods Program helps address food insecurity in our community. We are looking for volunteers to help us make sandwiches (peanut butter and jelly, ham, turkey, etc) to share with the families we serve in our community in Takoma Park and Silver Spring. The pandemic brought about by COVID-19 have made these families even more vulnerable than before and they need some additional food support. A sandwich is a small way that we can bridge the distance between us and them and help them with their food insecurity. We would love to have individuals and groups supporting this effort. Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by making sandwiches until schools return to normal status. 10 sandwiches= 1 hour of service Note: Sandwiches should be made the day before. Please do not make them in advance because they won't be at their best. The sandwiches should be made so that they are ready to eat. Please add mayonnaise and mustard to the sandwiches with meat in them. Cheese is welcome too. There is a high demand for TURKEY sandwiches. :) Please note that if you are making more than 20 sandwiches that you should be making different types of sandwiches so that they are not all PB&J. If you plan to make more than 60 sandwiches you must reach out to me to get my approval. Please let me know how many sandwiches you are making and how many of each type. Instructions (Please note that your work must be submitted via a Google form): -Please document your sandwich making by taking an action shot photo of them being made and a group shot of the bagged sandwiches once you've finished making them -Make a log by writing down the date(s), the number of sandwiches made, and have your parent initial it and take a photo of it -Make sandwiches and wrap each on individually using either wax paper or sandwich bags (no foil please) -Use the bread bag to package them and label the outside of the bag with the type of sandwiches made. -Submit your photos, etc via the google form. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSediZ90q8kB_AIIAK702rGYlGTPnq5z29zoFKiSbcggxaHDrg/viewform?usp=sf_link In order to receive SSL credit, you must submit both a photo of all of the sandwiches you made and your log of the amounts of the items initialed by your parent. Please submit your work via the form only once. Once your donations and your google form is received you will get an email with the SSL hours you've earned. You will need to fill in sections 1 and 3 of you SSL form and turn in both this and the email to your school's SSL coordinator. They will then credit your hours. DROPOFF Sandwich donations can be dropped off at the Bedford Station Apartments (1400 University Blvd E, Hyattsville, MD 20783) on the first and third Fridays of each month from 7:30am-8:30am. To drop off please bring your sandwiches in a box to the main office and leave it by the fence. Please note: You cannot bring your donations to Bedford Station Apartments any other day or time than stated above. It is a distribution site, not our office. Thanks! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Do I need to sign up? There is no need to sign up, just start making sandwiches as soon as you like. Is there a limit to how many I make? Please do not make more than 20 sandwiches of the same type of sandwiches to drop off per day, ie you can make 20 ham/cheese, 20 PB&J, 20 turkey Is this approved for MCPS SSL hours - YES. Are these items still needed? YES, it is still an ongoing need. How will I receive my SSL hours? Once your donations and your google form is received you will get an email with the SSL hours you've earned. Volunteer: Bone Builders Volunteer Leader - Ross Boddy Neighborhood Recreation Center SiteBone Builders is seeking caring, physically active older adults, perhaps just entering retirement, who have an interest in leading a group exercise class for seniors at Ross Boddy Neighborhood Recreation Center in Sandy Spring, MD. Volunteer: Join a Network of Scientists Supporting Science Education and TeachersThe nonprofit organization Science is Elemental (SIE) is looking for scientists eager to support elementary school teachers and spend a few hours a month (flexibly) answering teachers’ questions about their science curriculum. If desired (but not essential for volunteering), there will also be opportunities to speak (virtually or in-person) about your science or career to elementary school students. While some elementary school teachers are well-grounded in the sciences, most are not, as being so is not a requirement for a degree in elementary education, nor for being hired in most school systems. As a result, they may need science support from others to fully understand the material they are teaching. The goal of this project is to provide the scientific background teachers want to know so that they can better serve their students. We need some scientists now, to complete our testing, and then more once the school year starts. Once the network is live, we plan to provide the answers to teachers’ questions within one hour. Volunteers will use Slack to receive and answer questions. It is expected that each volunteer monitor Slack, when they have time, for questions being asked. In this manner, volunteers only provide their services when it is convenient for them to do so. Our goal is to have a sufficiently large network of scientist volunteers to allow coverage of the Slack channel for the entire day, and especially during and immediately after school hours. The qualifications for this volunteer role are: 1) At least three years working in any science (to include computer and data sciences, and engineering fields), or three years graduate study in such fields. 2) Willingness to obtain a Science is Elemental Slack account (at no cost to you) 3) Have some time during the day to monitor the Slack channel, even if it’s only for a few minutes at a time. 4) Desire to help elementary school teachers instill a love for the sciences in their students. In your response to this opportunity, please indicate if you might be available, depending on scheduling, to help SIE run some tests of the system this summer. Agency: Science is Elemental, Inc. Volunteer: Mosaic Creative Writing Judges NeededVolunteer to Judge Creative Writing Are you a writer or enthusiastic reader? Do you want to help inspire the next generation of authors? Apply to serve as a judge for our Mosaic Creative Writing Program by February 9, 2026. Check out the FAQs below for a recap of our program and judging expectations. What is the contest? Mosaic is our creative writing program geared towards students who are enrolled in MCPS middle schools, between 6th – 8th grades. Students write on the topic of “My Culture” in the form of short story, poetry, or essay. Mosaic allows them to fully explore their feelings and cultural identity at home and in the classroom. What skills are needed? Judges are needed to evaluate students' written work, in the form of short story, poetry, or essay based on a provided rubric. Judges should be compassionate and open-minded readers with a firm grasp of grammar and appreciation for diversity in literature. Applicants should feel comfortable using technology for submitting scores and navigating the FOLMC website. Where does this take place? From the comfort of your home. Judges will download a .pdf file of entries and upload scores via the FOLMC website. What’s the timeline in 2025/6? Judges will be provided one grade of student entries on or about February 26th with scores being due to FOLMC by March 18th. If there is a tie, judges may be asked to read submissions from a different grade level to break the tie. Those entries would be provided by March 21st with scores being due March 27th. Each grade level is approximately 50 entries, including all three genres. Due to the varied length of entries it is impossible to determine the exact amount of time needed to read, judge, and submit scores, however, judges have frequently indicated they had enough time to complete all tasks and enjoyed the program immensely. Dates are approximate and can change based on current events. What are judges provided? Each judge is provided a password protected site at folmc.org with the scoring rubric, scoring grid, and student entries. Once judging is over, judges will be invited to attend the awards ceremony featuring a notable author and gifted a copy of the published anthology. Are previous judges permitted to participate again? Yes, we encourage previous judges to re-apply to participate. Agency: Friends Of The Library, Montgomery County Volunteer to Judge Creative Writing Are you a writer or enthusiastic reader?
