With just 4 - 8 hours a month, you can support boys and girls living all over Montgomery County by offering friendship, encouragement, and learning opportunities. Join our team of dedicated volunteers who bring fresh, healthy and delicious meals from our Takoma Park kitchen to our homebound neighbors. Together, we are creating a more resilient, interconnected and compassionate community.

Each weekday, Meals on Wheels of Takoma Park and Silver Spring prepares two nourishing meals for hundreds of clients, helping them maintain their health and independence as they age, battle illness and recover from injuries. Demand for our services is rising -- tripling since 2020 -- and we're growing fast to meet the need.

Delivery volunteers pick up meals around noon and hand them to clients at their homes along routes designed to take less than 90 minutes. Volunteers often work in pairs, with one driving and the other running meals from the car to the neighbor's door. Classics AAU Basketball is seeking volunteer coaches for its AAU club youth teams for 2025 and 2026 through out the year . Coaching commitment is typically two practices/week and then tournaments and league games on most weekends throughout the year. Coach travel and related expenses are reimbursable or deductible on taxes as a volunteer.

Must have at least experience of playing high school and/or college sports and a desire and commitment to coach youth sports. Basketball specific experience a plus. 

Must have clean background investigation through Lexis/Nexis and subject to AAU membership acceptance. 

Getting Into It: After an initial phone interview with AAU club president and other coach(es) as needed, we then follow-up by an in-situ evaluation on the court coaching practices of preferred age group/gender players. 

Must complete Positive Coaching Alliance and other AAU online courses in Youth Protection and AAU Coaches Excellence Course within 60 days

We are looking for volunteers to help us make sandwiches (peanut butter and jelly, ham, turkey, etc) to share with the families we serve in our community in Takoma Park and Silver Spring.  The pandemic brought about by COVID-19 have made these families even more vulnerable than before and they need some additional food support.  A sandwich is a small way that we can bridge the distance between us and them and help them with their food insecurity.  We would love to have individuals and groups supporting this effort.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by making sandwiches until schools return to normal status.  10 sandwiches= 1 hour of service

Note:  Sandwiches should be made the day before.  Please do not make them in advance because they won't be at their best. The sandwiches should be made so that they are ready to eat.  Please add mayonnaise and mustard to the sandwiches with meat in them.  Cheese is welcome too.  There is a high demand for TURKEY sandwiches.  :)

Please note that if you are making more than 20 sandwiches that you should be making different types of sandwiches so that they are not all PB&J.

If you plan to make more than 60 sandwiches you must reach out to me to get my approval.  Please let me know how many sandwiches you are making and how many of each type.

-Please document your sandwich making by taking an action shot photo of them being made and a group shot of the bagged sandwiches once you've finished making them

-Make a log by writing down the date(s), the number of sandwiches made, and have your parent initial it and take a photo of it

-Use the bread bag to package them and label the outside of the bag with the type of sandwiches made.

We are looking for volunteers to help us make frozen casseroles to share with food insecure families and individuals in our community.  The pandemic brought about by COVID-19 have made food insecure families even more vulnerable than before and they need some additional food support.  A casserole is a nice way to provide a hot meal for these families.  We would love to have individuals and groups supporting this effort.

Middle school and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by making casseroles until schools return to normal status.  1 casserole= 1 hour of service

Instructions (Please note that your work must be submitted via a Google form):

Favorite casseroles include: tuna casseroles, chili, mac and cheese, baked ziti, and chicken noodle, but all casseroles are loved!

-Please taking a photo of the casserole(s) being made and a photo of the completed casseroles

-Please use a disposable aluminum pans 9 x 13 for your dish.

-Please cook your casserole prior to freezing it.

-Please label each casserole with the name and the ingredients (for example: Chicken and Cheese Casserole: chicken,pasta, olive oil, onion, mushrooms, bread crumbs, butter, cheese). 

-Please wrap them well with aluminum foil. Please do not use the plastic cover that comes with some pans.

-Please write down the date, the number of casseroles made, and have your parent initial it and take a photo of it.

Instructions: 

-Please document your work by taking an action shot photo of them being assembled and a group shot of the finished package once you've finished 

-Purchase the cleaning supplies and make a nice handmade note

-Place the items in a clean plastic bag (please double bag) making sure that all the items are standing upright to avoid spilling.

-Make a log by writing down the number of kits made, along with your name and date and have your parent initial it

Spread holiday cheer by adding an ornament to our Community Tree.  The Tree will go up at the Kentlands Mansion in December.  This event is open to all ages. One ornament=1 SSL hour, with a maximum of two ornaments. Ornament supplies can be purchased on your own, or select supplies are available at the Kentlands Mansion. The Kentlands Mansion will post tutorials on their social media pages to create ornaments with materials most people have at home. Ornaments are due NLT Dec 19th at 4:00 p.m.

If you have never taken a Bone Builders class before, you will be placed in an existing class and mentored by the current co-leaders prior to beginning to help lead a class.

Volunteer: Join a Network of Scientists Supporting Science Education and Teachers

The nonprofit organization Science is Elemental (SIE) is looking for scientists eager to support elementary school teachers and spend a few hours a month (flexibly) answering teachers’ questions about their science curriculum. If desired (but not essential for volunteering), there will also be opportunities to speak (virtually or in-person) about your science or career to elementary school students. While some elementary school teachers are well-grounded in the sciences, most are not, as being so is not a requirement for a degree in elementary education, nor for being hired in most school systems. As a result, they may need science support from others to fully understand the material they are teaching.

 

The goal of this project is to provide the scientific background teachers want to know so that they can better serve their students. We need some scientists now, to complete our testing, and then more once the school year starts. Once the network is live, we plan to provide the answers to teachers’ questions within one hour.

 

Volunteers will use Slack to receive and answer questions. It is expected that each volunteer monitor Slack, when they have time, for questions being asked. In this manner, volunteers only provide their services when it is convenient for them to do so. Our goal is to have a sufficiently large network of scientist volunteers to allow coverage of the Slack channel for the entire day, and especially during and immediately after school hours.

 

The qualifications for this volunteer role are:

 

1)      At least three years working in any science (to include computer and data sciences, and engineering fields), or three years graduate study in such fields.

2)      Willingness to obtain a Science is Elemental Slack account (at no cost to you)

3)      Have some time during the day to monitor the Slack channel, even if it’s only for a few minutes at a time.

We currently need volunteers to monitor protective order hearings in Rockville or Silver Spring District Court for the morning sessions (8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.) on weekdays.  You will always attend court with at least one other person and meet after the court session to ensure that you and your co-monitor have recorded the same factual information. If there are discrepancies, you will resolve those and adjust your forms before leaving the courthouse. This step is critical to the accuracy of our data and is not optional.

Volunteers should be available to come to court at least twice a month for a minimum of a year due to the learning curve and training involved.

Please note that court monitors collect data on physical paper forms (no electronics are allowed in the courtroom), scan them via a phone app or an actual scanner, and email them to our Data Analyst & Manager for review. We seek court monitors who:

Election Workers and Election Judges are registered Maryland voters who volunteer to assist voters during the election process. Election Workers and Election Judges are instrumental in ensuring fair and accessible elections for all voters and protecting the integrity of the election process. In accordance with Federal and State law, they must perform duties assigned by the local Board of Elections faithfully, diligently, and without partiality or prejudice.

Every election approximately 4,111 Election Judges and Election Workers are needed to fill a variety of roles to ensure the election is carried out honestly and accurately.

Volunteers may serve as:

Election Judges - facilitating the election in a polling place during Early Voting or on Election DayDrop Box Attendants – retrieving ballots from designated drop boxesCanvassers – assisting in counting voted ballotsNursing Home Program – assisting voters in designated nursing homes

We offer a variety of positions with full-day and part-day hours of service. Some positions require prior experience and/or use of an automobile. Election Judges who are bilingual in Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and French are needed to help voters requesting language assistance.

Election Judges and Election Workers receive a set stipend (payment), based on their assigned position. To receive the service stipend, you must successfully complete all required training and fulfill all election duties to which you are assigned.

The Community Garden at HCH is a 400 sq ft space with 24 garden beds and a greenhouse, used by community members to grow their own food and by HCH to grow seedlings and produce for donation—helping provide fresh, nutritious foods to those facing food insecurity.

We’re looking for volunteers to support garden maintenance during scheduled shifts. This is a great chance to learn about gardening, connect with the local community, and support our mission.

Volunteer tasks may include:

· Weeding, planting, watering, harvesting, pest management, other garden tasks

· Applying bulk soil amendments, dumping and spreading wood chips

· Compost maintenance

· Greenhouse and tool shed organization and cleaning

Tasks vary with the season, with the most help needed in spring and summer. HCH provides tools, gloves, and guidance. At least one staff member will be on-site during shifts.

What to bring/wear:

· Water bottle, and snacks if desired

· Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

· Closed-toe shoes

Volunteers must be 18+ or accompanied by a guardian, unless arranged otherwise. All activities are optional—please take breaks as needed—but note that many tasks involve physical labor such as lifting, squatting, standing for long periods, and working in hot weather.

Our Virtual Service Policy

Developers will create educational materials for natural sciences curricula. This includes slide presentations, example activities, and extension activities. The Natural Sciences Education Department may also host educational events and competitions, including but not limited to guest speaker seminars, pitch contests, and remote lab activities, for which developers are permitted to instruct.

 

Quality work must be submitted before the deadline and done in a professional manner. Students will earn hour-for-hour the amount of time serving when they are directly supervised, as well as limited additional hours per week for asynchronous tasks they are assigned to.

Service hours are defined as the time volunteers spend completing tasks assigned by their director in furthering the mission of Elevate the Future Maryland—working to achieve business and STEM literacy for all. Service hours are tracked by our directors, who review the submitted evidence, maintain a log, verify student service on MCPS Form 560-51 (Student Service Learning Activity Verification)

 

Please note the following guidelines for student service through live virtual platforms:

A student’s parent/guardian must provide the nonprofit with written approval of the student’s participation in the virtual platform prior to the student serving/volunteering. Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform. Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times. The nonprofit supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If the nonprofit supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur. Virtual sessions will not be recorded. Students will not be asked to share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves unless the nonprofit organization has obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release. Students’ email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not be shared.

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety and privacy at any time the student is interacting with the nonprofit and its clients. Where does this take place? From the comfort of your home. Judges will download a .pdf file of entries and upload scores via the FOLMC website.


What’s the timeline in 2025/6? Judges will be provided one grade of student entries on or about February 26th with scores being due to FOLMC by March 18th. If there is a tie, judges may be asked to read submissions from a different grade level to break the tie. Those entries would be provided by March 21st with scores being due March 27th. Each grade level is approximately 50 entries, including all three genres. Due to the varied length of entries it is impossible to determine the exact amount of time needed to read, judge, and submit scores, however, judges have frequently indicated they had enough time to complete all tasks and enjoyed the program immensely. Students enter the Future Link program through a 15-week Self-Advocacy and Career Development Seminar, after which they are matched with a mentor.

Mentors meet the student where they are, working with them on:

Soft skills such as time management, communication, and asking for help. Evaluating career paths and required education or training requirements. Preparing transfer applications and researching and applying for scholarships. Creating a resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile. Navigating the complexities of higher education and office/company cultures. Critically thinking through decisions and brainstorming outcomes. Working through external factors (family pressures, work commitments, mental health).

Mentors become the regular point of contact with the student and the Future Link staff. In addition, Future Link provides resources as needed to support the student and mentor. For instance, if the student needs to create a budget or a LinkedIn profile and that is not the mentor's strength, a different volunteer will work with the student in that area.

Mentors attend two training sessions and a one-on-one meeting with staff before meeting their mentee. Continuous support is provided once matched with a mentee. We request an initial one-year commitment with an option to continue beyond that time frame. Mentors must be 30+ years of age, live or work in Montgomery County, Maryland and have at least five years’ work experience in their career field.

Play a vital role and make an impact on 550 families in the mid county region by serving on Fridays sorting and packing supplies in preparation for Saturday distribution.  This is a great opportunity for those who can only serve in the evening hours!   

Help is needed on Fridays between 2pm – 6pm to sort supplies and bag food for Saturday pickup. Tasks may include moving food from pallet to shelves/bags, setting up tables, signing in/signing out site volunteers.  Note this is an IN-PERSON activity held indoors.

Volunteers should wear comfortable attire, be able to stand for 2-3 hours and be able to lift and move minimum of 10-15 pounds repeatedly.

FourNineFive Legacy Volleyball Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the goal growing boys volleyball by affording players from families with limited financial resources opportunities to play.  We are looking for student volunteers to serve as Marketing & Social Media Managers to help develop social media marketing content and campaigns to increase visibility, engagement, and community involvement. This internship is designed specifically for students eager to explore the world of media production, content creation, social media, communications or marketing.

Responsibilities:

Assist in the production of multimedia content such as videos and social media posts.

Participate in brainstorming sessions for content ideas and campaign strategies.

Help with editing tasks for videos and audio content.

Support the social media team in content scheduling and community engagement efforts.

Qualifications:

A qualified candidate has excellent communication skills, is technology savvy, can work independently, and interested in working for a 501c3 nonprofit. Candidates must have access to a computer and reliable internet access. Must be proficient in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Knowledge of social media eg Facebook, Twitter/X, Linked In and Instagram plus blogs and other communication platforms, a plus.

Familiarity with the sport of volleyball.

Comfort working or learning Google Suite including: Google Docs, Forms etc. This role is best for a very creative self-starter who has ability and initiative to work independently from home.

We will award SSL hours according to the following equivalency:

1 marketing collateral created (e.g., flyer, brochure, etc.) = 2 SSL hours
