Harvest Intercontinental Church in Olney, Maryland serves the mid county region providing food and other vital services to residents every week. Play a vital role and make an impact on 550 families in the mid county region by serving on Fridays sorting and packing supplies in preparation for Saturday distribution.  This is a great opportunity for those who can only serve in the evening hours!   

Help is needed on Fridays between 2pm – 6pm to  sort supplies and bag food for Saturday pickup. Tasks may include moving food from pallet to shelves/bags, setting up tables, signing in/signing out site volunteers.  Note this is an IN-PERSON activity held indoors.

Volunteers should wear comfortable attire, be able to stand for 2-3 hours and be able to lift and move minimum of 10-15 pounds repeatedly.

FourNineFive Legacy Volleyball Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the goal growing boys volleyball by affording players from families with limited financial resources opportunities to play.  We are looking for student volunteers to serve as Marketing & Social Media Managers to help develop social media marketing content and campaigns to increase visibility, engagement, and community involvement. This internship is designed specifically for students eager to explore the world of media production, content creation, social media, communications or marketing.

Responsibilities:

Assist in the production of multimedia content such as videos and social media posts.

Participate in brainstorming sessions for content ideas and campaign strategies.

Help with editing tasks for videos and audio content.

Support the social media team in content scheduling and community engagement efforts.

Qualifications:

A qualified candidate has excellent communication skills, is technology savvy, can work independently, and interested in working for a 501c3 nonprofit. Candidates must have access to a computer and reliable internet access. Must be proficient in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Knowledge of social media eg Facebook, Twitter/X, Linked In and Instagram plus blogs and other communication platforms, a plus.

Familiarity with the sport of volleyball.

Comfort working or learning Google Suite including: Google Docs, Forms etc. This role is best for a very creative self-starter who has ability and initiative to work independently from home.

We will award SSL hours according to the following equivalency:

1 marketing collateral created (e.g., flyer, brochure, etc.) = 2 SSL hours

1 social media post = 1 hour

1 marketing video created = 4 SSL hours

Volunteers will also attend check-in meetings with our core team through a virtual platform (Google Meet) using their personal/private accounts and SSL hours will also be granted for meetings (1 meeting hour = 1 SSL hour). Web developers will work with clients—small businesses—recording specifications, creating planning documentation, and using online web editorial tools to build web infrastructure for beneficiaries free of cost.

Miracle League Buddies are volunteers ranging in age from elementary school to senior citizens.  These include family members, individuals, and local youth and civic groups.  All Buddies are expected to demonstrate appropriate maturity, and to exhibit sensitivity and good judgment when interacting with Players.”  Many people refer to the Buddy volunteers as “Angels in the Outfield.”   Buddies can bring their own equipment but that is not required. What is required is to provide smiles and laughter to the Miracle League Players.

The minimum age for a Buddy is 13.  All Buddies are expected to demonstrate appropriate maturity, and to exhibit sensitivity and good judgment when interacting with Players.  The goals for Miracle League Buddies are:

We have volunteer opportunities in the Fall and Spring seasons on Saturday and Sunday.

Got a group that wants to volunteer? 

KEEN has opportunities on the weekends from September through June. In Montgomery County, those opportunities are mostly on Sundays at KEEN Sports for Kids, Teens or Young Adults. (Ask about other opportunities as well.) 

During KEEN's Sports Programs, athletes (KEEN's young people with disabilities, ages 5-25) and volunteers come together for one-to-one activities in a group setting. Together they do individual activities that are tailored solely to the needs of the athlete. They may throw a basketball or kick a soccer ball, or they may take a walk around the outdoor track. Many love to bounce on 36" balls or be pulled along the floor on a flat wheeled scooter. A group may form for Duck, Duck, Goose. The session ends with everyone coming together in a circle (although some athletes still need to run around its periphery, and that's okay) and sharing with the group what they did that day "that made them very Proud." They literally go out dancing: the Hokey Pokey for the younger kids and the Macarena for the teens and young adults. Athletes burn energy, meet and interact with new volunteers, see old friends, and then rejoin their parents, who have had some precious respite time. There are six food distributions a month including a Wednesday distribution which serves about 550 households, the first Saturday that serves about 300 households, and a TEFAP distribution which serves 30-50 households. Groceries and diapers are distributed to community members who walk-up and drive up as well as through community partners. Clifton Park Baptist Church partners with 7 other local organizations, nonprofits and other churches who receive food at our location for their clients who are in need.

Volunteer to pack bags of fresh produce on WEDNESDAYS (10:00AM – 2:30PM) for partner distributions within the community. Volunteers should wear comfortable attire, be able to stand for 2-3 hours and be able to lift and move 10-15 pounds repeatedly. Specific instructions provided upon arrival.

Heart pillows are ideal for those who received surgical procedures near the underarm, and can act as a protective barrier between sensitive areas and the car seatbelt. Volunteers may choose to make sewn or crocheted heart-shaped pillows to show patients that we care!

NOTE: We do NOT accept no-sew pillows.

We welcome unisex colors and patterns (NO holiday or religious patterns, as noted in our project guidelines) and recommend a size of 9 x 9 inches, using cotton fabric for sewn pillows. For the safety of our recipients, please use new and unused materials.Please do not superglue pillows. Pillows must be sewn following the tutorials below, without stuffing coming out. Please feel free to Google to find other patterns.

Hughes United Methodist Church serves as one of seven Montgomery County Consolidated Services Hubs delivering food assistance and other vital services to a growing number of Mid County residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since March 2020, Hughes has provided more than 900,000 pounds of free groceries to 36,000 households. The needs continue to grow and we appreciate your interest.

ENERGETIC VOLUNTEERS are needed to help distribute food, they are assigned a station in which they will help our clients to classify the food they require. The activity takes place indoors and involves standing for at least 2 hours and lifting up to 35 pounds. Volunteers must dress accordingly.

COVID-19: Physical distancing protocols are followed to provide a safe environment for everyone.  All volunteers must complete a temperature check upon arrival in order to sign in for their shift. Gloves are provided, but you must bring and wear your own mask.

As we collaborate with these organizations, we are learning about the services they provide, volunteer opportunities available, and vital resources to share with people in need. Volunteers will research the organizations, their contact info, and basic information about their projects.

Another virtual research opportunity involves policy reforms in the DMV. As we  strive to defend human rights, we are learning about organizations that are involved in the industry. Volunteers will research organizations involved in policy-making and the programs they implement to help the community.

These virtual volunteer opportunities will be hosted by a supervisor, so they will earn hour-for-hour the time they are serving.

Small Things Matter's Kokua Foods Program helps address food insecurity in our community.  

We are looking for vaccinated teens (and adults) to help us pack and distribute food to the families that we serve.  The pandemic brought about by COVID-19 have made these families even more vulnerable than before and they need some additional food support.  These staples and fresh produce help them with their food insecurity.  

Middle school and high school students who are vaccinated are eligible to earn SSL hours by working onsite at our distributions on Tuesdays. Community service hours are also available.  Please see our website for the dates.

BECA is seeking Summer Camp Counselors for our annual Summer Camp, a summer bridge program for 1st – 6th-grade students from our partner schools, San Jeronimo Bilingual School and Santa Monica Bilingual School, in Honduras.

For interested volunteers who are not available during our summer camp weeks, we offer similar service learning volunteer opportunities for small groups - including student groups, families, and other organizations/companies.

The three-week summer camp (that happens annually - typically the last week of June through the first two weeks of July) includes fun games, activities, and literacy and math enrichment. The camp contributes to preventing summer learning loss and offers BECA's students an enriching opportunity during a time when many of their peers are still in school (public schools in Honduras operate on a February - November schedule). Our camp counselors and Counselors in Training learn just as much as our students do and have just as much fun too. 

Our counselors are a wonderfully varied group - including recent high school graduates, current college students on summer vacation, educators looking for service learning summer opportunities, and even retirees from all over the world. 

All Summer Camp Counselors (and other service learning volunteers) connect with the BECA team and each other via email and two onboarding video calls prior to coming to Honduras to discuss the following:

packing/arriving in-country

brainstorming the summer camp theme

lesson planning topics for reading & writing, arts & crafts, and physical education

We kick off with a 3-4 day orientation in-country (shorter for shorter experiences)

Summer Camp runs 8:00 am – 12:00 pm, Monday through Friday

In the afternoons, the team is busy completing a service project, participating in a reflection series, going on home visits, or participating in team bonding activities

RESPONSIBILITIES

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

Because the Summer Camp is a supplemental program, BECA recoups the program’s expenses through donations paid by Summer Camp Counselors and CITs. We ask that you contribute or fundraise $1,500 for the BECA program to help defray costs (staff support, food, accommodation, and training). A limited number of reduced contribution slots may be available. If you are interested in a service learning experience for your group, we are happy to discuss a fee structure that makes sense for all. We can also help groups/individuals set up a fundraising page using our networkforgood platform.

For current college students and educators, please note that volunteers in the past have successfully applied for on-campus grant monies or local grant opportunities to cover this expense and travel. We encourage you to explore what opportunities your college/community offers to subsidize summer experiences. Please contact us if you have any questions; we will try to help you in any way possible.

The Takoma Park Food Pantry is a food pantry located in Takoma Park, MD. We are operated by almost all volunteers.

EduCare is serving more people during the pandemic as well. Right now, we are serving 250 families a month, or about 385 people.

(About) 75% of our food comes from USDA, the rest is purchased from local retailers and donated by individuals.

We are supported by grants from Montgomery County, City of Takoma Park,  private individuals and families, community organizations and corporations.

(1) Music Videos for hospitals. The Tacy Foundation receives video recordings from volunteers for hospitals and seniors in the metropolitan area of Washington/Baltimore/Wilmington/Philadelphia/New York City, the Northeast corridor. The YouTube playlists are also sent nationwide to Fisher Houses and hospitals wherever requested.  Children are invited to participate in the recording and distribution for these musical gifts. The Foundation is dedicated to sending sounds of hope and healing through music.  1 hour of SSL Credit per video.  Songs must be at least late elementary/intermediate level and range from 3 to 10 minutes in length.). Public Domain status or written permission from the publisher are required.

This is an ongoing project.  Contact The Tacy Foundation for opportunities. Videos are uploaded on the Foundation's YouTube Playlist. Each year over 300 videos are placed on a new playlist for the purpose of sending hope and healing into the communities. Thanks to technology, the music videos are placed on QR code Cards with contact information for the recipients.  This makes for easy shipping along with handmade greeting cards from volunteers.

(4) The Reading Express brings a story to life through children's books. Volunteers are needed to supervise craft tables at the library and help with cleanup following the event. Playing an instrument is required for recording music and participation in live concerts. Playing an instrument, organizing lesson material and communicating with children, a congenial outgoing personality, compassion for younger children, and dependability are required for the internship/mentor in the Piano Pals Program.  (1 hour of SSL Credit per book)

This is a free, 5-hour interactive course that puts the participant in the role of a provider in a post-disaster scene. This course is for individuals new to disaster response who want to learn the core goals of PFA, as well as for seasoned practitioners who want a review. It features innovative activities, video demonstrations, and mentor tips from the nation’s trauma experts and survivors. PFA online also offers a Learning Community where participants can share about experiences using PFA in the field, receive guidance during times of disaster, and obtain additional resources and training.

The course can be completed in small blocks of time or as time permits.

Occasionally, Child Welfare Services need assistance with making folders, checking information inside folders, photocopying, putting together packets, filing and very light secretarial duties as needed. Individuals will be exposed to case sensitive information and must be willing to sign a confidentiality waiver form. Great for teenagers but not limited to teenagers.

Approximately once a month, volunteers – adults, children, individuals, families, and groups – put on hairnets, gloves, and aprons and carefully measure and package ingredients that become over 10,000 nutritious meals for the underserved in our area. Our packing events are tikkun olam at its very heart, and the meals we pack are on people’s tables within a week.

Clear Objectives: Each activity must have a specific goal or outcome that aligns with the organization’s mission. The student should be able to articulate how their work meets these objectives.

Verification: Evidence of the completed activity must be submitted, including but not limited to:

Written reflection or description of the process and outcomes

Presentation or report (video, PowerPoint, etc.)

Activity 1: Green Entrepreneurship or Green Career Program

Research and present a report on a sustainable business idea.

Equivalency: 2 hours for research + 1 hour for the presentation = 3 SSL hours.

Activity 2: Community Engagement Campaign

Design a campaign (flyers, social media) to raise awareness of sustainability issues in the community.

Equivalency: 2 hours of design work = 2 SSL hours.

Students are required to submit their final products for review to the organization, following these steps:

Submission of Materials:

All completed materials (photos, reports, presentations) must be submitted via email or an online submission form provided by the organization.

A deadline for submission will be clearly communicated.

Review Process:

A designated reviewer from the organization will assess the submissions against the set criteria for completion and quality.

Feedback will be provided within one week of submission.

Final Approval:

As a volunteer in our Job Readiness Program, you will be involved in the following key tasks:

Providing Guidance and Support: As a mentor, you will offer guidance and encouragement to our participants, helping them build confidence in their tasks and abilities.

Skill Development: You will assist participants with job-related skills around our main barn, chickens, and soapery. 

Hands-On Training: Volunteers help create simulated work environments where participants can practice their skills. This hands-on approach is crucial for their learning and development. Personalized Mentorship: Building a one-on-one relationship with participants to understand their individual needs and goals, providing tailored support and advice.

Volunteers must be over the age of 16 to volunteer in our Job Readiness Program, and around the horses. We offer comprehensive training to ensure you feel confident and prepared for your mentoring role. Additionally, working closely with our participants and other volunteers is a unique and enriching experience that fosters personal growth and community development.

The Job Readiness program runs weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.

Students must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.

Students will only engage with others under the direct supervision of a nonprofit supervisor. The nonprofit supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.

Join the Gardening Team & plant and maintain gardens at Inwood House. In this role, volunteers will help cultivate grounds that are well-cared for and welcoming. Volunteers who enjoy being outdoors, working with their hands, engaging with residents and educating residents on gardening, and being creative will thrive in this role.

COMMITMENT This position has flexible hours, and we will work with your schedule. Having one consistent day/time per week to assist in the gardens and assist the residents with gardening is preferred.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Perform gardening duties including weeding, digging, pruning, planting, sweeping paths, poisoning weeds, cleaning, general repairs and ad hoc duties as assigned.

 2. Help maintain the gardens and grounds in good condition together with various displays of plants.

 3. Assist with planning and development of garden and grounds.

 4. Maintain herbs, fruits and vegetable garden and harvest herbs, fruits and vegetables when ready.

This is a good opportunity to spend some time with our clients, as well as have some fun. Come in and help with tabletop games. This involves cleaning out our activity closets, to make more space. We would really appreciate some help cleaning up and organizing our activity space, and closets.

Warrior Canine Connection is a non-profit organization which breeds, raises and trains dogs with the assistance of Veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), or mobility issues. These dogs are eventually placed as service dogs for Wounded Warriors, military family support dogs, or facility dogs for Veteran Organizations. 

We are always looking for Canine Care Volunteers. Our Canine Care Volunteer slots are currently daily from 8am-10am, and 6-8pm. This volunteer position offers volunteers the opportunity to progress from our entry level Tier 1, where volunteers will be washing bowls, filling Kongs, and filling water buckets, up to Tier 2 where volunteers will have the opportunity to walk, bathe and do enrichment with our Service Dogs in Training.  

To become a Canine Care Volunteer, you must be at least 16 years old, or 12 years old and accompanied by a parent or guardian and attend a Canine Care Volunteer Orientation that takes place monthly in person at our Healing Quarters in Boyds, MD. This orientation is designed to familiarize you with our mission, and expectations and guidelines of our operations so you are equipped with the context and information in anticipation for your first shift. You will receive a reminder email from SignUp a few days prior of your assignment. After attending orientation, we’ll send you a separate link to sign up for your first shift. Volunteer-Office/Program Coordinator:   The mission of the Montgomery County Police Department’s Keeping Seniors Safe (KSS) outreach program is to educate senior groups on ways to prevent fraud, scams, and identity theft. Our speakers also focus on how to stay safe at home, when out shopping, and to provide tips on emergency preparedness.   We seek an organized individual to serve as the primary liaison to a friendly team of volunteer KSS presenters to handle requests for presentations via telephone and email while maintaining a detailed group calendar of scheduled events. We would look to you for creative ideas on how to market the KSS program when reaching out to community recreation centers, senior living facilities and faith communities who might benefit from free speakers to educate senior audiences. We also need you to order brochures on safety-related topics and to keep them well-stocked and neatly displayed in the Volunteer Resources Office. The Program Coordinator will also collect and compile data which will be used to document the outcome of this important MCPD community outreach program. BlackRock Center for the Arts strives to bring inspiring performances and visual art experiences to a diverse audience in the Germantown area. interPLAY Orchestra rehearses and performs at Strathmore Music Center in North Bethesda, Maryland. Our purpose is to provide a stimulating creative and unique approach to music for adults with intellectual, developmental and/or physical disabilities. Most of the Musicians in our orchestra are not able to read music, which has often been a barrier to musical expression. The Musicians work side by side with non-disabled volunteer students and adult artists.

Student (SSL) Volunteers assist interPLAY Orchestra with music operations and other orchestra support functions. Volunteers who assist our Orchestra Conductor with live rehearsals and performances are known as "Bandaides". Live rehearsals are held every Monday evening from 6:30-8:00pm, at Strathmore. 

Students who are at least 15 years old may apply to be a Bandaide. While training is available, we give preference to students who have some prior musical experience or experience working with persons with disabilities. Students who wish to do other kinds of orchestra support work are not required to have prior experience, but a desire to learn and reliability are very important. Additional support work may include clerical and administrative, inventory, event coordination, IT support, graphic design, and marketing support.  

All on-site work is supervised and performed either at Strathmore or other public venues in the Rockville area.

DCCK’s social ventures include serving scratch-cooked farm-to-school meals in DC schools, delivering fresh, affordable produce to corner stores in neighborhoods without supermarkets, and operating fast-casual cafes throughout the District of Columbia. DC Central Kitchen volunteers work alongside our devoted front-line staff and Culinary Job Training students to cut, chop, peel, and prep fresh produce as we prepare balanced meals for our community. Volunteer shifts are available for registration up to 3 months in advance. No cooking or food service experience required!

Montgomery Parks has many Student Service Learning (SSL) approved volunteer opportunities! Students can earn SSL hours volunteering in a variety of ways, depending on the time the year and what's available.  Some of the opportunities MAY include staffing and/or taking photos at our special events; helping out at nature centers as animal caretakers, camp counselors and naturalist aides; helping our Archeology Crew; assisting office administration; removing invasive plants and vines; helping out at park & stream cleanups; gardening; and much more!

FYI - SSL hours will only be awarded by Park staff if they were notified and have given approval for the volunteer work ahead of time. Music and Love is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and tax-exempt charitable organization. Music and Love organization offers live performances for residents of Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, and Nursing Homes. We also provide a program designed for K-12 students to serve our community through music performances. 

The Music and Love organization is seeking individuals or groups who are passionate about music to play musical instruments, sing songs, or dance. If you meet these criteria, then you are encouraged to join our organization.

Responsibilities:
• Train and mentor young cheerleaders in cheers, chants, dances, jumps, and stunts.
• Foster teamwork, positivity, and sportsmanship within the team.
• Create exciting routines for performances and events.
• Ensure a safe and encouraging practice environment.

Qualifications:
• Cheerleading experience or coaching background preferred.
• Passion for working with youth and inspiring confidence.
• Strong communication and leadership skills.

This role demands patience, enthusiasm, leadership skills, and a genuine interest in nurturing the girls' physical abilities, teamwork, and self-confidence through cheerleading.

Each Sunday between the hours of 11am to 4pm, our volunteers pack bags of non-perishables and add bread, produce, pastries, soups etc to bags for Montgomery county families that have put in a request for food assistance to pick up.

We have shifts in 1 hour increments between the hours of 11-4pm on Sundays.  You can sign up for 1 hour or the entire 5 hour shift.

This fulfills MCPS SSL Hours.

This is a wonderful and fulfilling opportunity for high school students and adults.

High school volunteer students (10-12th grades) who can speak Korean fluently are sought to assist Korean language education program on Saturdays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm for Fall 2023 semester starting from August 26. Must be fluent in both Korean and English; TOPIK II test score higher than Level 4 or equivalent Korean fluency certificate. Should have own transportation means.

Piano Pals® for Seniors-   Private mentoring for a senior living in an assisted living facility.  

The High School student schedules a piano lesson on a weekly or bi-weekly basis with an interested senior.  The lessons begin anywhere from the beginner level to the level where the senior is.  If a beginner, the teen uses Piano for Adult Beginners provided by Faber Piano Adventures.   If the senior student has played, the teen brings materials that are meaningful to the senior.  

Piano lessons are great platforms for seniors to connect with a youth.  Present and past are conjoined through the music that is studied and the conversation that inevitably unfolds.  A relationship is forged through the attention of a teen who is knowledgeable in music and eager to learn from the senior about history, family, culture, and the aging brain. The senior has time.  

These sessions will be under supervision of an adult volunteer on the premises.  Scheduled by the Activity Director of the assisted living facility.

1 hour ssl credit for mentors per class.   SSL Hours are logged and approved by the Assisted Living staff at the facility if you are under the staff's supervision there.  If Tacy Foundation staff are present at all times and only when TF staff are onsite, you may log your hours with the foundation.

Montgomery Parks can be a great place for you to do your Girl Scout Silver or Gold Award projects!

Although sometimes Park Staff have projects in mind, the number of applicants far outnumbers them. It is often up to the scout to find a suitable project. We suggest you choose a park location that is convenient to you and explore the area to see what amenities you can help create or restore. 

Park staff will work with you to review your project proposal prior to approval.  The scout will then be responsible for good communication with Park Staff, and completing the project in a timely manner.
