Volunteer: Farm-Fresh Produce Bag Delivery Drivers

We're looking for volunteer drivers to pick up produce bags at our FarmShare aggregation hub (220 Girard St, Gaithersburg) and deliver the bags to 6-8 families in a neighborhood community, from June to November. Each volunteer's route is the same each week, which offers volunteers the opportunity to build a sense of community with the families and the farmers. We do our best to match volunteers to nearby communities where you live in order to minimize the carbon footprint and to make the best use of your time.

This volunteer position is great for those people that like to have something on the calendar on a consistent basis. We understand that things do come up, kids get sick, and we all need time for summer vacation! For these reasons, each route will also have a pool of back-up drivers so volunteers can have some flexibility as needed.

Not approved for MCPS SSL hours.

Volunteer: Supervisor/teacher for young people at farm sanctuary

Are you retired from teaching and missing working with young people? Star Gazing Farm is an animal sanctuary that houses approximately 55 animals from 11 different species and offers a weekly work and learn program for students ages 12 and up.

We are looking for a seasoned educator who is interested in encouraging young people’s interest in animal care and welfare. Providing guidance and supervision is a key component of this volunteer job.

The work the students perform includes:

·       Cleaning barns

·       Scrubbing and filling water troughs and buckets

·       Tidying the indoor small animal room (rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs)\

·       Grooming the animals

·       Assisting with animal husbandry tasks such as deworming, administering shots, hoof trimming and shearing

·       Staffing events·

Every Saturday we allot 6 places for students to sign up to volunteer. (note: we also have occasional adults who volunteer but they generally do not work in a supervisory role). Saturday workdays run from 9am to 1pm.

These students volunteer at the farm primarily because they are animal lovers. It is a wonderful opportunity for them to have hands-on experience with both large and small animals and to exercise both their mind and their bodies in doing farm work.

While engaging in the work itself is educational and healthy, we wish to further enrich their experience by providing both more direct supervision and weekly educational components relating to animal care and animal welfare.

We are seeking an experienced educator who enjoys working with teens and can motivate them to go beyond just the “regular” task list. This person will act as primary supervisor for the students:

·       Making sure they understand how to use the tools available to them.

·       Checking to see that jobs are properly completed.

·       Ensuring that everyone is working safely and in a collegial manner.

·       Keeping the flow of work going yet making sure needed breaks are taken.

·       Helping students consider important questions regarding the animals they are working to help.

·       Providing a short weekly educational exercise (homework is fine!) in relation to animal care and welfare.

Other notes:

·       The supervisor is not required to perform the physical work but only to demonstrate use of tools.

·       The farm is small (4 acres) but there is a lot of walking including up and down hills in the course of a Saturday.

·       We heartily welcome retired schoolteachers and coaches.

WHY A Home of Their Own Animal Rescue Exists:

We founded our rescue after working in other shelters and rescues and seeing the same heartbreaking pattern: good, well-meaning people being turned away without even a conversation. We watched great potential adopters overlooked because of outdated rules and rigid expectations, while animals sat in kennels waiting for the mythical “perfect” home. Meanwhile, those turned away often ended up at breeders — and who could blame them? They were trying to do the right thing and were told they weren’t good enough.

We realized the system was failing both people and animals, and it wasn’t really about the animals’ safety — it was about the peoples’ fears.

So we started our own rescue, one built on conversation, not judgment, and rooted in the belief that adoption should be accessible, educational, and welcoming. That shift allows us to match more animals with adopters based on genuine connection, not unrealistic perfection — saving more lives, encouraging adoption over shopping, and helping people feel seen, supported, and proud to welcome a pet into their lives.

ABOUT A Home of Their Own Animal Rescue and WHAT we are doing:

In just a couple years as a 501(c)(3), we’ve rescued hundreds of dogs and cats from all over the country—including Puerto Rico—and placed them in loving homes that fit their needs as well as the needs of their new humans! What started as a reaction to the unnecessary gatekeeping and outdated norms in animal rescue has become a growing movement to make adoption easier, more inclusive, flexible, and rooted in empathy and education.

We’ve built a strong and expanding network of passionate volunteers, partnered with local vets and businesses, and made a real mark in the community. One of our most memorable rescues—a 7-week-old kitten trapped inside a scorching car engine—was featured in The MoCo Show as a symbol of quick action, collaboration, and heart. Read the story here: https://mocoshow.com/2025/06/30/cat-rescued-from-car-engine-in-extreme-heat/

We’ve been honored by the trust adopters place in us, reflected in glowing Yelp and Google reviews, and we’re only just getting started.

Our goals go beyond our own rescue: we aim to shift the animal welfare field itself—advocating for nonjudgmental conversations, educating the community about animal welfare topics such as vetting and training/animal behavior, and eliminating barriers deeply rooted in fear and/or bias, including racial prejudice in adoption and foster approvals. We believe rescue should feel accessible, supportive, and human—because when we do better for people, we do better for animals.

What a "day in the life" of an outreach manager will look like:

From your very first day as Outreach Manager, you’ll become the voice and connector of our mission—helping build bridges between our rescue, the community, and potential supporters. You’ll start by familiarizing yourself with our messaging platforms (Slack, Google Workspace), creative tools (Canva Pro), and project systems, and then hit the ground running with email and social media communications. Early days will include learning our tone, meeting our team, and understanding our goals.
As you settle in, your skills in public relations, social media engagement, and sales will come to life through managing campaigns, promoting events, responding to inquiries, and cultivating partnerships with donors and the public. You’ll juggle tasks, brainstorm creative outreach ideas, and represent AHOTO across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn—all while keeping a persuasive, mission-first voice.
Over time, you’ll become a key part of our growth by bringing energy, strategy, and heart into every connection you make. Passion for animal rescue drives everything here, and your role helps ensure that every animal’s story is not only told but heard.

We are looking for volunteers to go once a week and help maintain the cleanliness of the cat's condos in the cat centers.  This includes scooping their litter box (or a full litter box change if needed), using the provided cleaners to sweep out and clean the condos to keep them sanitary, change out any dirty beds and toys with new fresh ones,  making sure that they have fresh water and clean bowls and general just tidying up.  It is really important that the cats are kept clean to prevent them getting sick. We also want volunteers to spend time playing with the cats and kittens so they get well socialized and handled routinely.  After your visit we ask for a visit report letting us know how the cat(s) are doing, any observations on their personality, and your interactions with them. Pictures/videos are great too!

The available hours are 9 am - 9 pm Mondays through Saturdays and 10 am - 7 pm on Sundays for Petsmart Locations. There isn't an hour requirement for this volunteer opportunity: we encourage people to sign up on a recurring basis ideally once a week.

Not approved for MCPS SSL hours. See guidelines for agencies on how virtual opportunities may be considered for SSL.

Volunteer: GO Rides Board Chair

About the Role

For 14 years, GO Rides has been a pillar of support, founded with the goal of empowering seniors to age in place. We are seeking a visionary Board Chair to lead our organization into its next chapter. In this role, you aren’t just a volunteer; you are the primary advocate for our mission, ensuring that our community’s seniors continue to live with independence, dignity, and a reliable ride.

Responsibilities: Leading the Mission

Strategic Oversight: Review organizational goals and community needs to ensure every decision we make aligns with our 14-year mission of senior empowerment. Board Governance: Lead our monthly board meetings, fostering a collaborative environment where we can refine our "success templates" for growth and sustainability. Executive Coordination: Serve as the key point of contact for our board members, providing the high-level guidance needed to manage our fiscal health and organizational data. Succession & Growth: Ensure GO Rides remains a vibrant community staple by overseeing long-term projects and tracking our progress toward future milestones.

The Impact of Your Leadership

Your leadership provides the structural backbone that allows our services to flourish. By steering the Board, you ensure the continued viability of:

Our Safety Net: Maintaining our existing structures, enabling many in-need seniors to get the transportation they need. Community Identity: Representing GO Rides at the Chamber of Commerce and ensuring our presence at flagship events like Community Day in Olney. Sustainable Funding: Providing the strategic "green light" for fundraisers like Bingo and grant applications that keep our programs free for seniors.

Training & Transition

Volunteer: Writing science question and answer storyboards for videotaping

There are several really awesome YouTube sites that provide amazing videos answering science questions and talking about the wonders of the world around us. Science is Elemental, in its work to bring science to students who might not go seek it out also wants to support their teachers, seeks to join them. We are embarking on an effort to provide fun cool videos, geared toward elementary school teachers and their students, about the science that is part of our every day world, and in our daily environments.

If you can bring a joy for learning, a sense of humor to add a joke or two, and a willingness to write your own and critique other storyboards as we prep to make videos, this is an opportunity for you. Requirements are an interest in science, and plain English, high-clarity writing. Video experience a plus but not required.

While this is a virtual opportunity, there may be times when you can join in the actual video filming, although it is not a requirement that you do so. Even if you wish to be present to see your storyboard come to life, there is absolutely no requirement to be on camera.

Not approved for MCPS SSL hours.

Volunteer: Adolescent Puppy Raisers Needed - Co-Raise a Service Dog for a Veteran with a Parent or Guardian!

Warrior Canine Connection is a non-profit organization which breeds, raises and trains dogs with the assistance of Veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), or mobility issues. These dogs are eventually placed as service dogs for Wounded Warriors, military family support dogs, or facility dogs for Veteran Organizations. We are actively seeking volunteers to serve as Puppy Parents for future service dogs in training and would love for Montgomery County youth to co-raise with their parent or guardian.

For the duration of their training, WCC pups live in Puppy Raiser's homes. In addition to any training the dogs do with Warriors, they are constantly working on their skills in a home environment and at training sessions at WCC.

Puppy Raisers train our service dogs for 4 to 20 months before the dogs graduate and are placed with their forever Veteran. Each puppy goes home with his or her Puppy Parent between the ages of 8-12 weeks. To be considered for this important task, you must be willing and able to provide the following support and training for the WCC service dog in training:

Must co-raise with a parent or guardian Provide a stable, safe, consistent and loving environment Provide the dog with access to new places, new people and new experiences Supervise the dog throughout the day Teach the dog manners and basic commands Keep the dog on a leash at all times or supervised in a securely fenced area Closely monitor the dog’s progress and submit monthly reports and complete a brief daily journal to reflect on the dog's progress and your experiences Attend weekly training classes that build skills and confidence Provide the dog with age-appropriate socialization opportunities Ensure that the WCC dog is the only dog under the age of one in your home Agree to return the dog upon request

Click here to learn more:  https://warriorcanineconnection.org/get-involved/become-a-puppy-raiser/

As a youth co-raiser, you can earn 1 SSL hour for each day that you have the dog and take an active role in its training and healthcare (This is not a dog fostering program).  In order to demonstrate this you must attend weekly trainings, complete monthly progress reports, submit the daily reflective journal every 12 weeks, and bring your dog to Head Quarters in Germantown when necessary.  If not all parts are completed, the student will only earn a portion of the hours based on their involvement.  This is a big responsibility, but it will be so rewarding.  Not only can you earn SSL hours, but you will be serving the Veteran community, learning how to train a dog, and this experience will look amazing on college resumes.

Questions? Contact puppyparent@warriorcanineconnection.org

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian.
