The JCA Heyman Interages® Center intergenerational programs have brought children and older adults together for more than 30 years.  Are you 50+? We are seeking volunteers for a number of opportunities including reading with children, in-classroom support, virtual tutoring in schools and with families, dialogues between the ages, book clubs, art, and music appreciation programming. More as well.  We have in person and virtual programs.

Join Us as a Read Across the Generations Facilitator!

Location: Gaithersburg Library
When: Wednesdays, 4:00 PM - 5:20 PM
For: PreK-5th grade children and their families

We’re looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to facilitate our Read Across the Generations program. As a facilitator, you'll:

Encourage families to read with JCA Interages volunteers at the library

Act as a volunteer liaison with JCA and Library staff

Help promote the program to the community

Assist librarians in selecting age-appropriate books for the program

Student participation in this service project is at the discretion of the student’s parent/guardian and must be completed outside of school hours in a public space under direct supervision of the nonprofit organization. The nonprofit organization is responsible for maintaining student safety. Parents/guardians should contact the nonprofit directly with any questions and/or concerns.

Grandreaders 

Volunteers are paired with a second or third grader and read with them, working on the child’s literacy. This takes place at school. Please note: areas in the school where the activity happens vary depending on each school’s available resources.

JCA Interages is seeking volunteers aged 50 + Afterschool and Before School programs 

Bridges Program at Daly Elementary School, 20301 Brandermill Dr, Germantown, MD 20876, Wednesdays, 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm, Starting Nov. 8, 2023. Academic year long program. Relationship building activities and language strengthening. Students first language is Spanish and French, etc. Volunteers do not need to know a second language.

Readers Theater 

Reader’s theater is a style of theater in which the readers gather in small groups to convey stories using vocal expression to help the audience understand it. Reader’s theater increases reading comprehension and reading motivation and helps develop fluency through repeated exposure to text.

JCA Interages has provided meaningful intergenerational programs for more than 30 years.  Our volunteer opportunities for those 50+ take place in Montgomery County Public Schools, MCPL libraries, and other organizations.

We are seeking volunteers aged 50+ to help children k-5 with homework and fun learning activities afterschool.  In partnership with Maryvale Elementary and Linkages to Learning 1010 1st Street Rockville, MD 20850 Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:00 – 5:00 pm. Choose reading, writing, and/or math. Assist with homework and other fun activities. Two days/week preferred. Grades: K-5.
