The largest Electric Vehicle Show on the East Coast needs your help in making our event another big success again this year. The EV show is a National Drive Electric Month event and locally organized by Poolesville Green, Inc. If you love the latest in tech and cars too, this is a great opportunity for you! SSL hours provided for students.

The EV show takes place during popular the Poolesville Day street festival featuring a parade, live music, festival food and more. The EV Show is located on the western end of the festival near the corner of Fisher Ave and Elgin Rd in Poolesville, MD. Upon arrival, please check in at the tent in front of Anytime Fitness at 19942 Fisher Ave, Poolesville, MD.

Volunteer tasks include the following:

*Help with EVs in the Parade (requires walking 1.5 miles):

Carry parade banner announcing the EV portion of the parade, or
Hand out EV Show announcement fliers along the parade route to spectators
The parade activity requires volunteer to arrive no later than 8:00am

*Assist with EV driver event registration & check-in

*Hand out give-aways and brochures at the Poolesville Green table.

*Assist in receiving & packing small rechargeable electronics for recycling collection (training provided) and plastic bag collection

*Assist visitors in calculating their carbon footprint score. (Easy instructions provided)

*Assist with free prize drawing activity

*Assist in setup and breakdown of displays

*Wear or assist with dinosaur costumes around the festival area to encourage visits to the EV show.

*Morning only or Afternoon only volunteer time frames are available

Join our young adults for an hour of Zumba dancing. With the instructor directing the steps, volunteers will help our athletes learn basic dance moves designed to help them with their coordination, balance and flexibility, as well as self-esteem, stage presence and social skills. No dance skills required. The goal is to have fun with our athletes.

Our HOA needs volunteers to help set-up and clean-up for our annual picnic and also help run children's activities during the picnic (crafts and games). We have a variety of fun activities to assist with:

Moon bounce, Popcorn Machine, Cotton Candy, Spin Art, Food Distribution etc.

If you are comfortable helping children with games and crafts, working at food tables and doing some light lifting then our group would be so happy to have your help!

Got a group that wants to volunteer? 

KEEN has opportunities on the weekends from September through June. In Montgomery County, those opportunities are mostly on Sundays at KEEN Sports for Kids, Teens or Young Adults. (Ask about other opportunities as well.) 

During KEEN's Sports Programs, athletes (KEEN's young people with disabilities, ages 5-25) and volunteers come together for one-to-one activities in a group setting. Together they do individual activities that are tailored solely to the needs of the athlete. They may throw a basketball or kick a soccer ball, or they may take a walk around the outdoor track. Many love to bounce on 36" balls or be pulled along the floor on a flat wheeled scooter. A group may form for Duck, Duck, Goose. The session ends with everyone coming together in a circle (although some athletes still need to run around its periphery, and that's okay) and sharing with the group what they did that day "that made them very Proud." They literally go out dancing: the Hokey Pokey for the younger kids and the Macarena for the teens and young adults. Athletes burn energy, meet and interact with new volunteers, see old friends, and then rejoin their parents, who have had some precious respite time. The Community Design Lab is a mobile, nature-inspired studio that brings community-led design to your neighborhood.  We are seeking artists, illustrators, painters, sketchers, designers, and other creative individuals who are passionate about the natural world and willing to share their talents with our community.

Volunteers may choose to contribute in a variety of ways. Some artists will help develop and lead nature-based art programs, workshops, and demonstrations for visitors. Others may prefer to work independently, creating original artwork, educational materials, displays, signage, or creative resources that support our environmental education and outreach efforts.

Whether you enjoy teaching others, creating behind the scenes, or both, your artistic skills can help inspire appreciation for nature, wildlife, and conservation.

No prior teaching experience is required. We welcome artists of all styles and skill levels who are enthusiastic about using creativity to connect people with nature.

The Community Design Lab is a volunteer program that connects art, creativity, and nature. We are seeking dedicated garden maintenance volunteers to help maintain our current and upcoming gardens in Montgomery County.

Help care for gardens, native plant habitats, and trees while supporting environmental stewardship and community beautification. Garden Maintenance Volunteers assist with planting, weeding, watering, mulching, pruning, invasive species removal, and seasonal garden clean-up. Whether you are an experienced gardener or simply enjoy working outdoors, your efforts help create healthy, welcoming spaces for people and wildlife. Training is provided, and volunteers can participate on a flexible, ongoing basis throughout the year. There may be instances where you are volunteering alone or with a group of volunteers.

Any students under age 18 will be directly supervised by an adult representative from The Urban Studio.

Activities include:

• Watering and mulching

• Pruning and seasonal garden care

• Removing invasive species

• Assisting with garden clean-ups and special workdays

CCACC Academy is looking for volunteers to assist with our Afterschool program for the Fall 2026 semester. Student volunteers can earn SSL hours through this program and gain valuable experience supporting their local community.

Volunteers will be responsible for check-in/check-out, helping move students to and from different activities, and assisting with program logistics. The afterschool program runs from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on weekdays, and volunteers will have the opportunity to confirm their availability.

Good Hope Union UMC is celebrating its 156th Homecoming, and we welcome volunteers to help our congregation and neighbors gather, connect, and access community resources. Volunteers will serve alongside church members and are essential to making our events warm, organized, and welcoming to all.

Depending on the shift and your interests, volunteers may:

•Greet and check in guests, vendors, and health partners, and help visitors find their way

•Set up and break down tables, chairs, signage, and vendor and exhibitor spaces

Volunteers will create physical cheerful penpal letters to brighten the day of hospitalized children, seniors, and students. These letters will be distributed to hospitals, senior centers, and youth programs to help brighten someone’s day and reduce feelings of isolation. Each letter is 1 SSL hour.

Please include a separate cover letter including your name, PERSONAL email address, school name, and number of cards submitted.

IMPORTANT: Please use a NORMAL, FULL-SIZE SHEET OF PAPER (approximately 8.5 × 11 inches). DO NOT use small pieces of paper, index cards, sticky notes, or mini/pre-cut cards.

Artwork can be created using colored pencils, markers, watercolor, crayons, etc. All drawings must be fully colored.

Physical artworks should be created on one full-size sheet of regular letter paper, cardstock, or watercolor paper (cardstock or watercolor paper preferred).

FOLD THE FULL-SIZE SHEET OF PAPER IN HALF TO CREATE YOUR CARD.

After folding the paper in half, draw on ONE SIDE of the OUTSIDE of the card. The inside will be used for your handwritten letter.

You can draw anything appropriate and encouraging. Please avoid violent and scary themes. Some good drawing ideas include nature landscapes, animals, flowers, sunsets, etc. 

Write a handwritten letter of 6–10 sentences about something you did recently, a hobby you enjoy, a favorite place or season, something that made you smile, etc.

IMPORTANT: When you open your folded card, there will be TWO INSIDE SIDES. Your handwritten letter MUST use and fill BOTH INSIDE SIDES of the card. Please do not write the entire letter on only one side.

Please DO NOT mention illness, politics, hospitals, or write phrases like “get well soon.” Instead, focus on sharing something cheerful about your life.

Each completed card counts as 1 SSL hour. Please start with a friendly greeting such as “Hi there!” or “Hello!” Please only include your first name at the end of the letter (Ex. Love, Alex). Letters should be handwritten so they feel more personal and genuine to the recipient.

Please do not include any personal information such as your full name, email address, or home address in your notes. Also, please do not include any real-life pictures or images of yourself. 

Examples: 

Submissions must meet basic quality standards. SSL hours will not be awarded if cards are made using small/incorrectly sized paper, are not fully colored, do not have writing on BOTH inside sides, include AI-generated artwork, appear very low effort (quick scribbles, unfinished drawings), contain inappropriate or negative content, or contain unoriginal/copied content (including templates).

Please create artwork that you would feel proud to give to a friend or display on your wall. Our goal is to share high-quality, cheerful artwork and messages that can truly brighten someone’s day.

SSL hours for submissions received before 8/30/2026 will be reviewed and sent out/before on 9/1/2026.

SSL hours for submissions received on or after 9/1/2026 will be reviewed and sent out in January 2027 at the latest.

Join the Montgomery County Family Biking Festival to celebrate biking, learn safe cycling tips and get safety resources, and explore opportunities for family and youth cycling.

YAMS is recruiting volunteers to perform at senior centers around Rockville, Potomac, Silver Spring, Northern Virginia, and beyond. For eight years, we have persistently kept this program going, bringing joy to senior homes while also nurturing many student leaders along the way. If you’re interested in sharing your music with seniors, this is a wonderful opportunity to bring them joy while also building your own performance skills. Middle and high school students are eligible to earn SSL hours by reviewing, finalizing, and creating content for our social media platforms, including TikTok ,Instagram and Facebook.

SSL Hour Equivalency:

-          Volunteers creating videos will receive SSL hours based on the actual amount of time spent producing the video, upon review and approval by Grace Helping Hands.

-          Volunteers reviewing videos will receive 1 SSL hour for every three (3) social media content pieces reviewed and finalized (e.g., TikTok, Instagram, or Facebook posts), upon review and approval by Grace Helping Hands.

-          All submitted work must meet Grace Helping Hands content standards and receive approval before SSL hours are awarded.

Age requirements: We accept volunteers aged 10 and older. All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Physical ability: While some of these tasks are physically strenuous, we have plenty of opportunities for folks that have physical limitations or other restrictions, and our warehouse is wheelchair accessible. Description: At our acclaimed Outdoor Food Distribution located in North Bethesda! Every Saturday So What Else provides free food to over 1,500 people in the parking lot in front of our warehouse with the help of our incredible volunteer team.

Volunteers will help with the following tasks: setting up tables, setting up tents, preparing produce, sorting produce, helping with line control, helping to direct traffic, and more. Volunteers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods, lift large boxes, and do a considerable amount of movement. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing they can both move around in and get dirty (NO CROCS ALLOWED). This event is entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift. This is a great opportunity for SSL hours, and children above 10 can participate as long as their parent/guardian accompanies anyone under 16.

AGE RESTRICTION: This is a great opportunity for children aged 10 and above to participate. A parent or guardian must accompany children aged 10-15, and if they arrive without one, their parent or guardian will be contacted. Volunteers aged 16 and above can participate independently without the presence of a parent or guardian.

5:30 am to 7:00 am: Volunteers will help prepare food boxes to load into cars for our drive-thru distribution and assist with traffic control. (Double Hours are available for individuals participating in the Maryland Community Service Program when volunteering for the Traffic Volunteer position.) (THE DOUBLE IS NOT FOR SSL)

7:00 am to 11:00 am: Volunteers will help load food boxes into cars, assist with breaking down empty boxes, and clean up where needed.

Come spend the afternoon with a Lucky Dog! We need dog handlers to hold a dog's leash during our adoption event and talk up the dog to potential adopters. We also need drivers to drive Lucky Dogs and cats to and from our adoption event. Handler check-in is at 11:15 am. You should plan to stay until 3:30 pm.

The final day to sign up for any event is the Friday before that specific event.

Wheaton is a community of diverse cultures and the parade and festival bring us together. On this day everyone can be an artist as they walk in the parade with family and neighbors, school or community organization, workmates and friends. There are no motor vehicles. There is no advertising or political campaigning - just people walking with art they can push, pull, carry, wear or perform. And everyone is walking to the arts festival in the Marian Fryer Town Plaza where there will be more than 60 tented booths of original art, three stages of continuous entertainment, and food that put Wheaton on the map. It will be diverse and inclusive. At the annual parade and festival, student volunteers may assist with check-in and set up of the exhibits and assist participants getting ready at the parade staging area, assist stage managers at the two performance stages, and staff the information booth. SSL Hours Provided. Volunteers will also receive a $5 Voucher that can be used toward the purchase of food or beverage from the festival vendors.

The Interfaith Works Women's Center at Taft provides short-term, emergency shelter services to adult women. In addition to temporary shelter, the IW Women's Center also provides case management services to each client. These services connect clients to other community resources, such as primary medical care, legal services, psychiatric services, permanent housing services, and vocational services.

We are looking for volunteers to prepare meals for the 70 clients at the IW Women's Center, located at 2 Taft Ct, Suite 100, Rockville MD, 20850. Meals need to be dropped off at the following times (please note you can drop off meals earlier):

· Breakfast: drop off by 6:00 am or the day before

· Lunch: drop off by 11:30 am

· Dinner: drop off by 6:00 pm

Students can earn 5 SSL hours for making homemade meals (not for store-bought or purchased items).  

In order to make donating meals for 70 women manageable, there are two slots for each meal. Donors should prepare meals for at least 35 people for each slot. If you are interested in providing a meal to our clients and would like to serve we can have up to 5 volunteers.  Breakfast is drop off only. Students can also earn SSL hours for the time spent serving meals outside of school hours.

If you're dropping off meals, please label the containers with the ingredients so our clients with dietary restrictions can be aware. When you arrive, you can either call our front staff at 301-770-2413 ext 0 or come into the lobby to deliver your donations. There will also be a cart outside available for you to use, if needed. Many middle schools seek high school volunteers to assist with their Grade 6 Outdoor Education program, and the schools listed on the SY27MCPS HS Outdoor Ed Assistant Interest form have asked for assistance in identifying potential assistants to work with them during Outdoor Ed.   

High school assistants who are selected to support a middle school will accompany middle school students and staff to one of the three sites MCPS utilizes for a 3-day, 2-night environmental education program and will assist with supervision, instruction, and activities throughout that program.   

There is no cost for high school assistants to participate, meals are provided, and assistants will have dedicated study time each day. High school assistants will need to submit a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian and must also receive permission from their teachers and administrators to participate.

High school assistants can earn up to 16 SSL hours through their work as an Outdoor Education Assistant.

In addition to temporary shelter, the IW Men's Center also provides case management services to each client. Lucky Dog Animal Rescue has an adoption event on Sunday, September 20th at the Falls Church PetSmart.

Come spend the afternoon with a Lucky Dog! We need dog handlers to hold a dog's leash during our adoption event and talk up the dog to potential adopters. We also need drivers to drive Lucky Dogs to and from our adoption event. Handler check-in is at 11:15 am (dog check-in starts at 11:45 am). You should plan to stay until 3:30 pm.

The final day to sign up for any event is the Friday before that specific event.

Signing up on this platform does NOT guarantee you a volunteer spot. On the Monday before the event, our events team will reach out to reconfirm your availability. You MUST respond to that email to be added to the list of volunteers for the event.

Must be at least 7 years old to volunteer, and anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent present at all times (the parent must be the one physically holding the dog's leash). Please note that you MUST have one adult in attendance for each child.

Looking for a small gardening group or a few interested  individuals who have at least some gardening experience to help us maintain our pollinator garden. This 6 x 35 ft garden is adjacent to our food production garden in Potomac and the native plants there are essential to providing habitat for the birds, bees and bugs that pollinate our vegetable plants. Responsibilities include, weeding, staking, mulching and, in the fall, helping to divide and relocate plants.

We operate under a Choice Market model. This model gives our clients the ability to choose the food items we offer that best meet the needs of their families in a grocery-store-like experience. This new model is the gold standard of food pantries--and deeply supports Nourishing Bethesda's commitment to honor our clients with agency and respect. Elrich Seeks Applicants for Commission on Children and Youth
 
County Executive Marc Elrich is seeking applicants to fill 16 vacancies on the Commission on Children and Youth, for four individuals with recent experience in agencies providing services to children and youth, four parents of youth and young adults (between the ages of 14 and 21), one private school representative and seven youth or young adults. Three agency representatives, four parents, and four youth are eligible to apply for reappointment.
 
The 27-member Commission advises the County Executive, County Council, Department of Health and Human Services, and Board of Education on policies, programs and services that support children, youth, and their families.
 
Adult members serve three-year terms, and youth members serve one-year terms without compensation. All are eligible for reimbursement for travel and dependent care for in-person meetings attended. The Commission currently meets virtually by video- and teleconference the second Wednesday of each month (except July and August). Members are expected to serve on committees of the Commission and these meetings are held in the middle of the full Commission meetings.
 
Applicants of diverse backgrounds, professions, genders, geography, abilities, ethnicities, and ages are encouraged to apply. Members of County boards, committees and commissions may not serve on more than one such group at a time. Members must complete training on the Maryland Open Meetings Act, Montgomery County Ethics Law, and basic parliamentary procedure. The County Executive’s appointments are subject to confirmation by the County Council. Applications of individuals nominated for appointment will be forwarded to the Council.
