Who We Are

Sunrise Movement Silver Spring, also known as “Sunrise Silver Spring”, is a youth organization which seeks to educate the public of Montgomery County on housing issues and climate issues. We are a local hub of the Sunrise Movement (EIN 82-1232167), which brought the Green New Deal to the national stage. Locally, we work with community members to raise awareness of housing issues and climate issues and empower community members to talk to each other and to their elected officials to find solutions to these pressing issues. We also host peer-to-peer academic support at our weekly meetings to support our youth. Join us to support your community and create a local Green New Deal!

What We Do

Volunteers will:

  1. Research and prepare educational materials pertaining to housing and climate issues in Montgomery County, to share with the public;
  2. Plan and attend educational events to educate the public on housing and climate issues;
  3. Help community members prepare stories and testimony related to housing and climate issues;
  4. Plan and attend town halls, community events, and other meetings to help members of the public share their stories related to housing and climate issues with elected officials;
  5. Participate in our peer-to-peer academic support program to ensure that youth have the support they need regardless of their finances;
  6. Help connect community members to services related to basic necessities (housing support programs, etc.);
  7. Support other community events with partner organizations (i.e., food drives, school supply drives, etc.); and
  8. Train other young people on any of the above.

The above list is non-exhaustive and meant to give a general idea.
