Who We Are

Stepping Stone Tutoring is a non-profit, student-led tutoring organization of high school tutors that aims to help students in underserved communities by providing them with free, online tutoring in 20+ courses. We feel that it is important to provide learning opportunities to underprivileged students, especially as the ongoing pandemic restricts many students from having a safe and collaborative learning environment, exploring new subjects, and participating in fun activities outside of school. We have, thus far, tutored students in 20+ courses for over 500 hours and have received many positive responses from both parents and students. The 50+ tutors on our team are well-qualified and eager to share their knowledge with any student, regardless of grade or skill level. Overall, our mission is to help underprivileged students and be a stepping stone in their path to more knowledge.

What We Do

Tutors provide free, one-on-one (supervised) tutoring services through Zoom to students in underserved communities. We offer 20+ courses and tutors personalize the lessons to meet each student's needs. In tutoring Sessions, the tutor teaches self-created lessons to the student in a subject of their choice. These sessions occur weekly for 30-60 minutes and each term lasts six weeks.

 Please read the following terms:

  • A tutor's parent/guardian must provide us with written approval of the tutor's participation in the virtual platform prior to the student tutoring.
  • Tutors must use personal/private accounts (not MCPS student accounts) to engage in the virtual platform.
  • Tutors will only engage with others under the direct supervision of our supervisor. Our supervisor will be directly present in the virtual space (including any breakout sessions) at all times.
  • Our supervisor will initiate and host all virtual sessions. If our supervisor is not available to initiate and host the virtual session, the session will not occur.
  • Virtual sessions will not be recorded.
  • Tutors should not share or upload any videos, pictures, or images of themselves, unless we have obtained a signed form/waiver from the student’s parent/guardian authorizing permission/release.
  • Students' email addresses/home addresses or any personally identifying information will remain protected and not shared.
  • SSL hours will be earned on a hour-for-hour basis depending on the amount of time tutors spend tutoring, conducting outreach, or creating lessons under supervision.
